Moving back to US... How do I get rid of our stuff?
« on: June 16, 2009, 04:20:20 AM »
After two years in the UK we are moving back to the US. We've set up a nice little 2 bedroom house and home office in London, but don't need most of the stuff in the US. How do people in the UK get rid of their furniture?  In the US we'd have a yard sale. We've asked our neighbors and friends about this, and they acting as if we're even more strange.

We'd like to recoup a little of the investment we have in the furniture, TVs, etc., and taking it all to a charity shop seems a little extreme, so anyone have suggestions?

Thanks!
Dan

Car boot sale?
eBay?
Gumtree?

Just ideas...  sometimes people post pictures of the items here on UKY and get rid of things that way.

I take it you rent? I was going to say if you own you could always include the bulk of it in the price of the house.
If you rent you could always ask the landlord if they would like to buy any of the goods off you.
Just some random thoughts probably not making much sense at 730 am without the benefit of caffeine  ;D

errr, yes we're renting.  We did offer the furniture to the landlord and incoming tenants, they might actually take some of it.  The small stuff we're not worried about, it's things like the beds, sofa, office desk, etc, that stresses us.  It's not very convenient to have a car boot sale of stuff that doesn't fit in a car boot!

We've put ads in the local paper and are currently putting up a website of it. Our friends and neighbors had few suggestions. Hence the questions.  Thanks for the input.

(anyone want some furniture???  ;-)  )

If you weren't in London, I could actually use some.  But you're very far, far, far from me!

Push comes to shove, I'm sure you could donate to charity.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!

Try eBay, as pick up only, for your furniture. Maybe someone will bite!

If you were working or studying, couldn't you post the stuff for sale on bulletin boards?
ETA:  local shops?

Craig's List!!! and tick 'London'.  That's how I shifted my stuff when I moved.

I totally hear ya about the strange looks from neighbours when I said I was moving and needed to shift furniture. I only moved from London to a completely furnished flat in Newcastle so I only needed to get rid of 2-3 pieces of furniture, like 1 single bed that I knew I was never going to need again.  I  got some pretty alien looks and was actually asked, " are you rich?"  The answer is No, and to this day I have no idea what prompted that question, as if only rich people sell furniture  :-\\\\  ....

because a lot of people don't have a garden.  and/or they live in a large city where people don't drive or a have a truck they can get parked to take away large items.

I can see where with houses so close together and smallish yards, it would be difficult to have a yard sale in many cases.  But I always wondered if it was maybe not allowed (??)

UPDATE:

We seem to have struck gold!  The incoming tenant has offered to buy almost everything in the house. Yippee.  Though the offer is lower than we'd like, not having to deal with moving  / selling is a huge load off of our shoulders (and backs).

FYI, I checked with the local council and we are allowed to have a "jumble sale" in our yard / driveway as long as we didn't obstruct traffic. Though they didn't seem to understand why we might want to do something like this.

Heading back in the US in a week.

That may be true in the city centers but lots of people have at least some kind of space in front of their homes they can use. What you say makes sense for some of the populace but not all.

Congrats on selling all your stuff to the tenant!
