Where to live in Essex?
« on: June 19, 2009, 03:39:02 PM »
My family (husband and, then, 2 yr old) may be moving to the UK late this year/ early next year.  We will be living in Essex, preferably inside the M25.  My salary would be at least 35K.  My husband will have to find work.

Does anyone have any idea what cities would be good to live in but relatively inexpensive?  Also family friendly?

Does it have to be Essex?  There are some nice areas right outside the M25.. Shenfield and Brentwood (yeeesh, did I just suggest that?)  I'd steer clear of Romford and Ilford.  Epping and Loughton are nice.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Ditto. Does it have to be Essex?  I have a friend in Brentwood...which is like eastenders with lots of cash... :P

I don't know much about how the areas are defined. If we move, I will be working for Essex County Council so I don't want to be far from work. I don't have more info regarding which location I would be working out of in Essex.  We are trying to be near the church we would be attending there. We've contacted them and they have given us some suggestions. I'm just trying to get more options.  Affordable options would be great!

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Essex County Council is administratively based in the town of Epping?

It's a lovely town and would be nice to live in but I gather the housing costs are pricey, for both rental and buying, because it's quite a desirable spot. You could always try Loughton and its little sister Debden which are just a couple of stops further down from Epping on the tube's Central line.
