prescriptions where do we stand?

Hi was wondering if anybody can help us,my wife is from the u.s.a and we were over the moon when we got married and she is with me permanently now in the u.k.Only been 2 weeks home now, so we have got her registered with a Dr as she has had organ transplants so needs meds regularly she has 9 drugs that she has to take,have got all the scripts from Dr but was wondering where we stand on having to pay for them she obviously has the old no recourse to public funds so can't claim any benefits.

If it's a condition that the NHS give free prescriptions for she is still entitled to that. DW has a thyroid condition and thought £7ish per item would be better than she had to pay before - the practice nurse informed her she was eligible to apply for the card to get the meds free!

Where in the UK do you live?  (England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland)

thanks for the replys,well we live in Scotland,my wife had a kidney and pancreas transplant so the drugs are vital.Luckily for me my Dr is a very nice man so he will maybe up the supply for her.

Have your wife talk to your GP and see if being a transplant recipient makes her eligible for free prescriptions.  On the off chance she isn't, I found this link that lists the prescription costs for Scotland.

Looks like they're going to be free for everyone in 2011-2012.

It's a Prescription Prepayment Certificates (PCC) valid for a year (you pay for it for the year then all your prescriptions are free), and works out much cheaper than paying for each prescription if she's getting more than 4 items in 3 months (which she is).
