Alright?

How on earth do you respond to the greeting "Alright?"

At first I thought that people thought I was ill or something, or that I just looked a bit off.

Now I just say "yes, how are you?"

Is that appropriate?

I'm so awkward.

Do you say it with some sort of inflection? Monotone?

al-RIGHT

ALL-right

ALL-never get used to it.

It's probably closer to al-RIGHT in terms of inflection, but it's often shortened to a one-syllable mumble (righ'?)... possibly with a quick head nod as well :). It's kind of the equivalent of saying 'Hey' :).

I've been over there so many times, you think I might have it down by now.

I'm going to practice right now, I hope I don't wake anyone up. :P

I usually say "Yeah, I'm good" or "I'm alright", depending on who I'm talking to.

As for how you say it, I kind of just slur "you alright" all together (must be because I was used to saying y'all!) but the emphasis is definitely on the last syllable.

I don't get 'alright' very often, if at all! I have heard it, but I think mostly on television. Is it a regional thing at all? Or do I just lead a very sheltered existence?  :P

I live in Cambridge and hear it all the time.  I think I'm used to it now, as the other day without thinking I responded "All right mate, you all right?"  ;)

There are two things that people don't say in Ireland and I'm very happy about: 'Alright?' and 'Ta'. I never knew how to respond to 'Alright?' and I would usually just bumble out some answer. And disliking 'Ta' is just a pet peeve of mine.

I'm SO GLAD none of my friends or family says that!  >:(

I never knew how to respond. The first time someone said it to me I was somewhat baffled. lol. I was also 17 and in a brand new country...

I still never know quite how to respond, b/c it just seems odd to me! I usually just say "yeah good, how are you?" or something. but I hate it!
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!
