Filing taxes for the last year in the States
« on: June 25, 2009, 04:11:24 PM »
hi,

I will be moving to the UK sometime around November, I am currently working stateside but plan to leave around that time. For my taxes, my W2 will be sent to my parents, what is the best way for me to then file my taxes for my earnings in the States when I am in London? Should they ship my W2, is there any way to file them with a service here and have them mail me the paperwork to sign? Any suggestions?

You can get the forms from the IRS website and do it yourself, or I know others have used Turbo Tax.  If you don't work in the UK at all in Nov or Dec they'll be really straightforward to do.

If the baby is moving over don't forget the Brit should claim child benefit as soon as baby gets to the UK!

It's my understanding that as long as you are a US citizen, you still have to file a US tax return (even if not a resident).... Even if you're not making any money in the US.

Is this right?

Yes this is what my accountant told me.  She also said if you're married to say you're married filing seperately.

I'm having my Mom take all tax docs to our accountant to do for me.  Last year I tried to do them on my own and screwed up royally.  I'm still waiting for my state refund!

If you have any income in the UK your US accountant may need to understand the US/UK tax treaty and FBAR rules.  Do ask if she or he does.

She says she does.  A colleague of hers does taxes for another expat. :)
