Anyone attending any summer music festivals?
« on: June 25, 2009, 11:14:03 PM »
It's something I had always wanted to experience, however I'm afraid I'm getting too old.

Radiohead is playing Reading Festival this year, but I'm not very tempted as I don't think I would enjoy the atmosphere. (My father-in-law works for Berkshire Fire Department and was called out every night during last year's Reading Festival for various cars and toilets set alight)

However, I convinced my husband to attend the End Of The Road Festival in Salisbury this year. I'm super excited to see Fleet Foxes, as both their London shows were sold out months in advance. The festival seems a bit more our style and pace.

Has anyone attended in past years, or care to share your summer festival plans?

I used to go to the Reading Festival every year, for like 5 years on the trot. I loved Reading because I could stay at the Hilton, and walk to the campsite. I did camp a few times, but I loved staying in a hotel! It was great fun! And I went to Glastonbury in 97, but the rain and mud put me off going again. Every year I kind of wish I was going, but I am glad in reality that I am not!

There's a fest that Metallica is playing at either at the end of the summer or beginning of the autumn......but at the moment we can't really afford the tickets.  Maybe I'll sell my body on the street for the money?! :p  JK!  Not going to result to that.

Madness is playing locally and we're going to see that, but it's not a fest.  Would LOVE to be at Glastonbury though because I love Blur.

Going to Hard Rock live this weekend (today and Sunday's shows). It's gonna rock- Killers, Kooks, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews and James Morrison! There's tons more supporting acts that I don't really know, too. Hope to catch a few of them.

I should say that I live right around the corner from the Old Trafford Cricket ground and every night this week has been like having Take That playing in my front garden, as much as I enjoy hearing it, I was thrilled to bits when they had a a break last night. Tonight is back to the loudness...

Is it Download?...

I went to download once, like 2 years ago, for Vincent's birthday. Never again. :P First of all, it's a Heavy Music Festival. I sing opera... (I do like SOME metal, but not death metal, which a lot of the bands were.) Second, I forgot to pack my hairbrush.  :-[ And it was sweltering for all 3 days. I was sweaty, covered in dirt, and had matted hair. I made Vincent drive me to the service station on the 3rd day so that I could shower and feel like myself again.

Oh, third, while we were watching Korn, the mosh pit got out of control. We thought we were safe on the side, next to the metal barriers. Well, people started surging out due to lack of Oxygen, and it was so powerful that we couldn't even stand anymore. The barrier collapsed, and a tent pole came down. Vincent and I were on the ground and people were climbing over us in a panic! :( I'm only little... Luckily people came to help us. They tried to pull Vincent away but he pushed them off of him so he could get me before I got hurt... I had a panic attack.

Like I said, never again.
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

I hear you, my wallet definitely felt a bit emptier after purchasing our tickets. However, this festival strives to keep their fair trade, organic food prices fair, and apparently all beer is around £3, so hopefully we won't have to spend an arm and a leg while we are there.

Radiohead is my favorite band of all time, so I feel a tug of regret.....but I will not go to any outdoor festival; it's not my idea of fun to be amongst crowds, in rain, or sun, muddy, shivery, and lining up for portapotties. I'm at an age where I value my physical comfort.  :)

Absolutely. Though, I have seen Radiohead live half a dozen times (including their big Oxford festival a few years back) I definitely prefer lying back in the lawn under the stars, soaking in the music. Reading Festival seems too crowded to get this sort of arrangement.

I'm hoping to hit End of the Road as well. Greenman didn't catch my fancy this year (although I do love Jarvis Cocker) so End of the Road seemed like the logical second choice.

Download was just over 2 weeks ago and Metallica wasn't there. DH & I really wanted to go but when you've got a toddler it's impossible. So we just stayed home and watched the live feeds from the main stage streaming on the Download website. It would have been so easy for us to go as well, Castle Donnington & Donnington Park is just about 10 miles away :(.

I don't think you ever get too old you just have to pick the right festival. I do Glastonbury every 5 years, i was 41 last time i went and i reckon 15% or more of those there were my age or older. Its so big that theres something for everyone, i saw a few bands, spent the rest of my time just wandering around the smaller stages and in the green fields.....apparently... [smiley=daisy.gif]

Alternatively there are smaller festivals that cater for an older crowd, Bestival is great, Camp Bestival is family friendly. Im sure other posters have reccomendations.

lol...just noticed your only 26.....too old?? :-\\\\

You are never to old to go to festivals! My good friend's mother goes every year (She has been to nearly every Glastonbury) and she is over 60. Festivals are for everyone.

Good on ya. I could never do Glastonbury now.. Been watching some of the footage on the BBC, and just shudder at the enormity of the crowd.

I'm sure 26 wouldn't be too old for some(most) people, but something like Glastonbury I could only have done when I was younger. I care too much about my creature comforts to enjoy something like that now. :)
