We probably have a thread on this, but I couldn't readily find it & I'm feeling lazy.  The researchers among us can step in & we can merge if necessary.

But just curious - what groceries, foods, drinks, treats, etc do those of you in the US most miss from here in the UK? (sort of reverse of all the god-I'm-missing-Taco-Bell-etc-etc-etc that we post about, living over here, all the time)

British sausages and bacon

British cheeses

M&S foods

Good Cadbury

Some of the biscuits

PG Tips

I also miss the small green grocers, fish mongers, and butchers. I enjoy the food shopping here (no, I don't just shop in the big supermarkets, we have lots of great ethnic shops) but I miss aspects of British food shopping. That said, the farmers markets are getting into gear here now, and that will help a lot.

British cheeses

Psst!  They don't have a huge selection, but it's all sooooooo good!

Scones

M&S Food

Balmerhon - You can find PG Tips over here, either SuperFresh or Giant, I have seen it in one or both, I forget since I converted back to Lipton after a few months back.

I'm not in the US, but definitely British cheese.

Wotsits - there's no substitute here that I have found so far.

Nando's - There's one in Dublin, but it's pretty far and we have to make plans to go there.

Nice curry

A better beer selection in pubs

Fortunately, they have M&S here so I can still get some of the treats I liked when I was in England.

Thanks! I've heard of them, but I'm not a big online food-orderer (yet!)... I know I can get it here, but I miss the ease of just buying it at the supermarket. I cannot understand why US cheese is so bad.

We drink a lot of it, I just hate paying the import price for it. I want one of those GIANT boxes of it!

Kim, do I need to give you some more curry recipes?!

You are right, the boxes are quite small and pricey. Also, they don't have the decaf option here so that is why we switched to Lipton.

You need to find local cheesemakers, stat.  Ask at Whole Foods.  Their cheese folks tend to know what's what when it comes to local stuff.  Believe me, there is a LOT of good stuff out there if you're willing to do a bit of legwork.

Tee hee. Yeah, DH and I are actually keeping a cheese journal so we can remember what we've tried and where. We've got a couple of Whole Foods near us, plus Trader Joe's, plus a couple other places we need to check out on recommendations. But like I said, I just miss the ease of finding the good stuff right next to the Laughing Cow at the supermarket! ;D All the other places, including Whole Foods, require a special trip (they're near, but not as near as where we do our normal shopping).

Once DH is on a normal schedule, we plan to do a lot more investigating!

I always hear good things about this place:

With apparently minimal cooking involved!  :)

I would so miss clotted cream.  I can make a really good scone myself, but mmmm, I love big dollops of artery-hardening clotted cream!

Wales is featured at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival this week in DC, so if you're in the area you can check out the food stalls! http://www.festival.si.edu/

I used to get that at Whole Foods in the States. It was the stuff in bottles, though, and it was unbelievably expensive.

Whole Foods does do clotted cream and has very good cheese (I agree with whoever said normal US cheese is no good). Unfortunately the nearest Whole Foods is in Tampa.

I miss Longley Farms yogurt. It was just yogurt, fruit and a little sugar. Everything I find here has weird thickeners and sweeteners in it.
If we called them Sad Meals, no one would buy them.
