In eight years, we have have gone through four washer/dryer combos.  I'm dying here.  Tired of replacing them.

Any recommendations for one that might last say ... five or six years before replacing?

I don't overload my machine, I don't use the dryer feature that often.  I use washing soda to soften the water.

Looking for a machine that has a delay feature, large load capacity and max sizes of 60x54x85.  Willing to chuck out £800 or so for a reliable machine.

Have a US one imported...made to last about 20 years. They run on 220v.

Man, I would kill for my extra large capacity Kenmore washing machine and dryer that I left in the US.  They lasted me over ten years with only $10 belt repair.

Ah, if only ...

I live in a shoe box; hence the need for a combo machine.  :(

If you don't use the dryer feature very often, is it essential to get a washer/dryer?  Our washer is an Indesit and has given us no problems in the 2 years we've had it.  I can get the model number if you like.  Our old flat had a washer/dryer and the once or twice I used the dryer, I wasn't impressed with the results, everything was just hot and damp.

My parents have a Zanussi washer-dryer. They've had it over ten years and it's still going strong, although they don't use the dryer very often.

Is there no way you could somehow find a place for a separate dryer?  A garage, utility area, or conservatory maybe?   The combination units really are poor for the dryer function.

I have heard that the combo units (I'm guessing certain brands/models) can break down alot. My old landlord said that's why he replaced it with just a washer before we moved in, because it kept breaking. (Still the washer broke in the year we were living there too LOL).

This just arrived at our place a few days ago.  Our earlier whirlpool crapped out (it was appx 7 years old) and this is what our landlord replaced it with.  So far, so good.  I was amazed -- it actually dried (really dried, not just steamed) towels in an hour.  So far, it's working quite well -- and I am loving the "quick" feature that finished a load of washing in an hour.

I've read good reviews on JL machines.

There is a Zanussi combo in this flat and beyond having to clean the filter, it works great.

Average life span on white goods is 5-6 years anyway, regardless of whether or not it's a washer/dryer.

I don't like washer/dryers, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I would avoid indesh*t like the plague, but hey they keep me in business.  ;)

Zanussi...they have their ups and downs, but if you don't have to repair them, don't worry about it.

Personally I'd go the Bosch / Neff / Siemens route.

Unless you want to be looking at it for  some time...and have money to spend, then hello Miele!

Ask and ye shall be babbled at.

The waste of such short-lived major appliances now is depressing.  At this rate, give it a few more years and most washers will probably come with "Made in China" labels and have the same lifespan as present-day toasters and kettles.    :(

I've finally settled on an AEG model.  Wanted a certain LG , but it would have sat 5cm proud of the worktop.  :(

Truth be told, I would have sank serious cash into Miele had they had a bigger drum size.  5KG is just too small.
