Pre-wedding visa checklist before crossing the pond
« on: July 02, 2009, 02:53:50 AM »
So in a few weeks my fiance will be in the States bring everything he needs for the spousal visa. Trying to form sort of a checklist of everything he will need so that right after the wedding we can get the ball rolling for our spousal visa for me to come to the UK. So heres what we have so far... any suggestions or think we are missing something:

- Letter from his employer stating how long he has been employed and salary
- Sponsor certified copy of Passports & Birth Certificates
- Sponsor Letter of Intent/Applicant Personal Letter
- Parents Letter giving permission for us to live there, how many rooms, copy of their deed
- Emails, online chats, letters, cards and photos of us
- Tax information
- Last three months of bank statements

3 months of payslips

I've been reading that you don't really need a lot of emails, chats, letters, cards, or photos when you're applying directly for the spousal because the marriage certificate proves the relationship, so I'd cut back on those and only include a shot of your inboxes and maybe a handful of photos.

If you have letters/cards/pics, I would ditch the chats.  There is no real way to prove it is you who sent them.  Anyone could have been using your names.

The other stuff you have is plenty.

Some last questions:

Part 11: Supporting documents checklist

"Evidence of how your trip is to be funded" - my fiance was going to book my flight and put it in his supporting letter.. but I am not sure what they want here.. a letter stating I will get a flight? even though I will have it shown in my bank statements I can buy a flight?

"Evidence of your current employment/self employment/occupation/work/studies/other means of support. Evidence of your total monthly income from all sources of employment or occupation after tax" - can this just be a letter from my employer stating I work there and a 2 paystubs? (I get paid bi-weekly)

"Evidence of the accommodation that you intend to occupy,
e.g. Land Registry documents, mortgage statements, rent book or rental agreement" - He lives currently with his parents, was going to include in his letter that he is saving up to move out when I arrive. So aside from the copy of the deed, what should be included in his parents letter?

Sorry to ask so much, just having those pre-applying jitters  :)

Just to add to this, make sure you understand how you will obtain your official marriage certificate, and how long it will take after the wedding to get it. Every county will do it differently. In NYC, for instance,  I had to make special arrangements with my officiant to go and obtain mine in person the day after the wedding, as they generally only do them by mail, and can take a while.

The letter from his parents needs to give you permission to live there and mention how many rooms are in the house to show that there is adequate space for you to live there. It also should state how much you will be paying them in rent.  You have to show that you CAN pay rent even if you dont actually pay it.

Aye we are just going to get a few official copies right after we get the first one.

Just another question, thanks in advance: Because my Fiance will be heading back to the UK after the wedding and can not send his passport with my spousal visa application where should be go to get a copy of it before he flies over?

You can go to your bank in the states and they should be able to notarize his passport photo page before he goes home.  You will need this OR a regular copy of his passport AND his original birth certificate.  Alternatively, he can go to a solicitor in the UK before he comes to the states and get a certified copy of the passport, but there will be a charge for this.

If you are going down the route of getting documents certified, it is best to go to an attorney/solicitor for this.  As he only needs one page it shouldn't cost much.

If he is sending his birth certificate, make sure it is the long form version.

Hi Vicky,
How can I check if I have my husband's Long form version of his birth cert. I have his birth cert certified and then just a copy of his passport i.d. page.  Maybe I should go ahead and get his passport page certified if I'm not certain his birth cert is long form.
Follow your bliss.

If it has his parents names and places of birth on it, it is long form.

Sorry....I was under the assumption that we had to have our own rented accomodation and that we weren't allowed to simply stay with another family and pay them rent???

Not at all, you can stay with parents, friends, other family, as long as you have your own room and the property isn't overcrowded.
