SSN? Same or new one?
« on: July 05, 2004, 10:46:10 PM »
I just had a thought ( one too many that is!) As I have to go through the I-130 process all over again, but I already have a SSN, does this mean I will just retain the old one ( or " current" one) which would then allow me to work as soon as I have that stamp in my passport ( unconditional I am thinking) or would I be issued with a new SSN?

Hmn?  All I did before leaving the U.S was call the number on the letter that my SSN card came on and let them know I was leaving and they said no problem - they had no concerns about identity theft ( I did, watched something horrific on Dateline once- ah, that lovely Stone Phillips, I have missed him!) anyway....that was back in 98.

Any thoughts?

My guess is that once it's yours - it's yours. Only a guess though  :-*

Well i dont think they would delete your SSN from the SSN database, so you should be able to stick with the one you have. Otherwise you could have gotten yourself in massive debt and caused all sorts of problems and just got off scot free with a new SSN

I have to agree with you - it was just someone elses experience on here being issued with a new number/card, when their first new number/card was delayed, possibly intercepted in the mail, that got me thinking.

dangerous things these eternal thoughts :)

your number is yours for life! So you dont have to worry about getting a new one. In fact they wouldnt give you a new one if you tried. Youd have to prove you were subject to identity theft to get a new one, so.... theres one step you dont have to mess with.
