Fly Screens on UK Homes???
« on: July 07, 2009, 12:28:30 PM »
Hi, I've been fitting door and window screens to many ex pats who have had difficulties finding premium retractable screens in the UK. One suggested I put a message on here. Perfect for keeping insects out but letting the fresh air in and direct from Canada. Please have a look at www.phantom-screens.co.uk [nofollow] or call us 01778 560070 or email me s.young@phantom-screens.co.uk. Happy to help Simon

Are these strong enough for pets or would animals such as cats just rip them to shreds in 5 minutes?

My parents have these on 3 of their doors and have a cat and a dog. The cat has never been know to claw things so she hasn't ripped it up yet. But she learned the frist time she tried to climb up it that is wasnt the best idea because when you have them pulled out they just click magnectically to the other side of the door but if they come unlached they zip right in to hiding again so if you push on it, it will give and if you push hard enough it will unlach. I have seen the dog (terrier) push hard enough to get underneath (the cat sometimes to) but not enough to ruin it.

Hi there, We have not had any problems yet and can supply with pet resistant mesh. As the other reply has stated cats are more likely to push under the screen. Please have a look at the website for more info or give us a call and we will organise a demo at your home. Thanks Simon. s.young@phantom-screens.co.uk  www.phantom-screens.co.uk [nofollow]

Hi The benefit of the retractable screens is that they are safely retracted when not in use so are less likely to be played with so much.

We have these on our patio doors in the US. The cats could easily push right under them, but I tie the handles together when I'm using them. So far , no escapes.

In the Uk we got those screens that stick on with velcro. Those are ok too.

Very interesting. . . I've often told my husband that all I need to be happy here are screens! Will have a look at your site, thanks.

Where do you  get screens that stick on with velcro?  I would LOVE those!  I hate that our windows don't have screens.  I'm always worried that the stuff we keep on the window sill will fall out the window and I hate how many bugs fly in.  Since we rent I haven't wanted to invest in permanent screens.

That's my problem too - we can't put in anything that involves screws. But I think our cats would rip velcro screens out in one fell swoop. Actually, if it wasn't for the cats I'd just put muslin or something on a curtain rail over the back door - that would keep the worst of the flies out and let enough air in. But our cats don't go out, so I fear there is no real solution.

BTW, am I the only one who gets really annoyed with people opening UKY accounts just to sell stuff?

No.  Although I don't mind if they are honest about it, like this thread.  The ones I hate are where they try to pretend to be someone else or try to sneak in their company's link in an otherwise unrelated message.  >:(

I got velcro ones for the my back door last year at aldi, don't know if they always carry them as their stock changes regularly. The ones we got have strips of netting hanging down, which works perfectly because the dog learned quickly to push through the strips and can get in and out easily, sometimes we have to readjust because there are gaps left after the dog goes through which allows flies in, but they work well and make a huge difference!

Betterware or some catalogue like that sells them.
I had this at my old house.

I agree with this.

Me too. As long as people are upfront about it, I'm happy for them to try and sell stuff. But please don't try to be sneaky! We're too smart to fall for that! (However, I do sort of think this kind of thing belongs in 'Classifieds.')
