Atomic Clock
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:37:05 PM »
Silly question, but my dad gave me an atomic clock last year for Christmas and I want to take it with me to the UK... will it work there?? (with the proper outlet adaptor of course)

Check the manual, the UK radio time signal (MSF) and the US one (WWVB) are on the same frequency but transmit slightly different signals, if it's been manufactured for the international market it may work, If it's been manufactured for the North American market only you'll be out of luck but they're not too pricey here.

I bought a Casio watch last time I was in the US that can receive MSF or WWVB and works with either.

Check the manual, the UK radio time signal (MSF) and the US one (WWVB) are on the same frequency but transmit slightly different signals

WWVB, Fort Collins, Colorado:

MSF, Anthorn, Cumberland, England:

The British MSF transmitter was moved to Anthorn only a couple of years ago.  Prior to that it was located at Rugby for many years, so you'll still see ads for suitable clocks referring to "Rugby time" sometimes (as well as being called "MSF clocks" or something similar).
