The beer thread -for QG!
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:50:54 PM »
 ;D

Okay so one of the challenges for some of us is adjusting to and find good beer when we move.  So... here's your thread!  Share  your favorite beers from around the globe!

Just say if it's in the USA or UK or somewhere else.

Real ales in the UK, micro brews in the US, far too many to mention and I always like to try new, particularly local, beers.

When a lot of Brits come over to the US they tend to start with Sam Adams and the like.

Moving on to microbrews later.  Most big supermarkets (higher end) have beer packs where you can create your own six pack.  I'll let DH come on and talk about the beers themselves since I have a memory like a sieve.

(Yes for you dear... just so you can find ones in Texas eventually!)

DH has tried a few of the Clipper City beers here and likes them:

Also, Q-G, take a look here:

Some of those listed have reviews, too.

Also, if you're in a decent-sized US city, it's worth the effort to seek out higher-end liquor stores.  Most will have a good selection of quality domestic and international brands (micro and major).

What city will you be in, Q-G? Any chance you'll get to Austin? I've not been, but I hear they have both excellent food and beer!

This *so* needs to be stickied!

A few thoughts....

Best British beers which are widely available - Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Caledonan Deuchars, Sharpe's Doombar, Hop Back's Summer Lightning.

Best British beers which are a little less run of the mill...Crouch Vale Gold, Skinner's Betty Stoggs, Brew Dog (the latter two increasing available in bottles, I've never seen Crouch Vale outside of beer festivals)

Best High Street brewery (London area)...Fuller's. Youngs also okay. Not Greene King, unless you are desperate!

Best place to go to buy beer from the UK and around the world...Utobeer, Borough Market (and also on line - they deliver!)

Best ale pub (London) - The Market Porter, Borough Market.  New discovery - The Carpenter's Arms, Marble Arch.

Best supermarket for bottled ale - Waitrose have the widest selection, though Aldi usually carry the entire Wytchwood range for only £1 per bottle!

Best Belgian beer - Zot or Tripel Karmeliet.  You can get this from Utobeer or Belgo's, a chain of Belgian restaurants. But it is probably cheaper to do what we did at Christmas, and go to Bruges with a large empty suitcase and fill it before coming home!

www.beerintheevening.com for pub reviews from an ale-cenric point of view

www.camra.org.uk for beer news and rough festival timetables

Best store in downtown Chicago for beers from around the US, UK and the rest of the world: www.warehouseliquors.com (South Loop)

For beer lovers in the UK, I am always here to answer questions or provide any assistance when it comes to British beers and breweries. Football, beer, immigration law, my three passions!

Don't forget the Great British Beer Festival, 4th - 8th August, Earl's Court.

The stuff in bottles tastes nothing like the draught stuff... I was drinking Brewdog Punk IPA last night and it was SO MUCH better than the bottled version... massive grapefruit hit!

Magic, thanks.

We got bought about 30 bottles of beer from various people for the wedding, all different kinds, different breweries, including a few Brew Dog's I'd never had before.  I think we are going to blog tasting notes!
