Applying for FAFSA & student loans
« on: July 10, 2009, 04:02:52 PM »
I was trying to apply for loans through Sallie Mae just now and I can't find my university on the list. I then realized that I think I've added the wrong university to my FAFSA -- I was accepted to Canterbury Christ Church Uni in Canterbury, England, but it seems the option I chose is for the University of Canterbury in Christ Church, NZ. Uh...

There's no other Christ Church option. Why wouldn't my university be an option? I don't know what to do now. I only have 5 weeks to try to sort all of this out and get my student visa. :(

Contact your uni's registry and ask them which American student loan companies they typically deal with.  My uni was familiar with Sallie Mae and American Student Assistance which you can find here: http://www.amsa.com/

I haven't used ASA so I don't know how their process works.

edit: Also, I'm remembering the drop down menu.  Did you click "foreign university" or some similar option first and then get another drop down menu with a list of foreign universities?  I also would contact FAFSA.  I'm not sure the particular school matters as long as the level of funding is the same ie: undergrad vs. postgrad, but it's better to be safe then sorry.  And don't worry, you'll get it sorted.

Okay, I've just sent off an email.

What a headache! I just hope I manage to get through all of this in time.

Edit: Yes, I did the whole foreign country thing as well as did multiple searches. I would have caught the error sooner, but it was listed as Univ of Canterbury, Christ Church and I thought it was strange that it didn't match up completely, but it was the only option so I went with it. If it has NZ listed, I wouldn't have been so stupid! lol

Anyway, I'm going to give the FAFSA people a call right now. Thanks so much for your help.

it's also possible that canterbury christ church does not have a fafsa school code.  Which I really hope isn't actually the case, because that would mean you wouldn't be able to use federal student loans there.  The vast majority of universities in the UK do have fafsa codes, there are just a handful that don't, which is why I'm hoping this is isn't the issue.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

They don't have a FAFSA code.

Do I give up now?

I have a fiance in England & if I needed, he could probably take out a private loan and pay off my first year in full. But will that even help anything? I still need to prove I have the funds for the cost of living.
