When a university doesn't have a FAFSA code...
« on: July 10, 2009, 04:53:19 PM »
I've spoken with the FAFSA customer service and have already called the International Office at the university. Apparently, there is no FAFSA code.

I was given the email address of someone in the International Office who deals with American financial stuff, so I've already emailed her and asked her about my options.

What do I do now? I just want to know how bad this is before I tell everyone I've been accepted.

I would probably start with taking a deep breath  :).  You might just want to wait until that person e-mails you back.  If they deal with American students regularly, then they'll most likely be able to help you or at least point you in the right direction.  Also remember that it is Friday and about 5pm over there, so it's possible that you might not get a response until Monday.

I really hope everything works out for you.

I think I was born to worry...

Anyway, thank you. I am just one of those people who never has anything go quite right, so I am feeling a bit fed up at the moment. But I will do whatever I need to do to make this work, so I guess I'll just take it one day at a time.

Do you think I should ask my fiance to apply for a loan? He could probably pay off my first year in full, but like I said, I don't know if they would even help me get my visa approved. I'm not so much worried about actually having money to live as I already have a place to live and someone to help support me, but it's all about having enough to get the visa.

Anyway, are there other documents I'll need? Transcripts?

I honestly have no idea how to handle it, but my first thought was seeing what you can do about getting student loans from a bank.  I know some of them do graduatePLUS loans.  I have no idea what the requirements are or anything, they may also require a university with a FAFSA code.  But it never hurts to call and find out.  I'd still wait to get that response e-mail before you make any decisions, though.

As for everything else, you'll need whatever documents are listed on your visa letter such as transcripts, diplomas, references, test scores, etc.  Mine only has my transcripts and bachelor's degree listed.  I may end up including more just because I always end up doing too much just to make sure I don't do too little.

Then of course there's the photos and the passport which is the easy part.

I'm not really sure about the finer points of accommodation as far as Tier 4 goes.  I'm living in university housing and will include my accommodation application and contract to prove that.  If you'll be staying with your fiancee it might be a similar situation to the fiancee and spouse visas. Maybe ask about that in your student visa thread in the visa section.

Sorry I can't really be of anymore help!  But don't give up when you've only just started.

I read somewhere that if a school hasn't got a FAFSA code they can apply for one (my case University of the West of Scotland) but that requires them to do some work but you may get lucky.  If your fiance does take out a loan, just note to get a student visa you need to have all the funds (one year of tuition and 600 pounds outwith London and 800 pounds in London per month for the length of your course) in your account for at least 28 days before you apply.
Good luck

in your account for at least 28 days before you apply.

Just to note that the 28-day rule for funds doesn't actually come into effect until October 1st 2009 (it was previously going to be June 1st 2009, but then the date was pushed back), so any applications made between now and September 30th will only need to have the money in the account on the day the application is made.
