What you will get, if allowed entry, is a stamp in your passport that states you can stay for the period of time they determine.  This is often refered to as your visa, but do not confuse it with prior entry clearance, which is a visa you apply for before your visit to guarantee you will be allowed entry.

Just to add, your burden of proof is the same either if you apply in advance or just show up at the border.

The documents you need to apply for a visitors visa are the same kind of things you would need if you just show up at the border. The benefit of this is that generally folks will apply for their visa before making travel arragements, but in your case, I'm afraid you will be out the money you spent on the plane ticket no matter what since your travel insurance will most likely not cover you in this instance.

This is from the ukvisas.gov.uk site:
What supporting documents should I include with my application?

You should include all the documents you can to show that you qualify for entry to the UK as a visitor. If you do not, we may refuse your application.

As a guide, you should include:
- bank statements, payslips, or some other evidence to show that you can pay for the trip and that you have enough money to support yourself and any dependants without working or getting any help from public funds, and
- evidence that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit (for example, a letter from your employer).

If you are visiting family or friends you will need:
- a letter from your sponsor (the person you are visiting) explaining your relationship with them and the purpose of your visit, and
- a copy of the bio-data page (the page containing their photograph) of their UK passport or, if they are not a UK national, evidence of their immigration status in the United Kingdom.

If your sponsor will be supporting you during your visit, or paying for the cost of the visit, you will need:
-payslips, bank statements, or some other evidence to show that they have enough money to support you.

We will refuse your application if we find that any documents are false
.

that sounds pretty good as i have all of that to bring with me at the border, besides proof of my sponsors funds....which is why i will bring my own.

i did not understand what u meant when u said i will be out the money i spent on my plane ticket no matter what? are you implying that u think i wont even get in? i sure hope not.

ill go for 1 day as opposed to not going at all.

If you show up at the border and they refuse entry, you will not be allowedinto the country and you will be detained at the airport and placed onto the next plane back to the US at your expense using your return ticket.

Ultimately the choice is yours of course, but I (and I am not an expert) think its risky to go without some evidence that you will leave the UK.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

but this shouldnt happen provided that i have all the necessary documentation correct?

Also, i just got my obligation to return home....and it is for a major IT/Networking company that they expect me back shortly after the winter months to undergo IT specialist training.

so i got that, and about $10,000 in funds ( can get more)

so i shoudnt be refused entrance correct?

also, does it matter if my sponsor had EMAILED the letter?and i printed it....it has her address, phone number, email, and all the information about my stay at her house.

am i getting there?

dont know what i'd do if it werent for this forum...thanks ALL.

I would get the IT company to write a letter stating when they expect you to show up, as that will help prove that you have ties to the US and plan to return.

No info for your other questions, though...good luck!

I think an important thing here is going to be showing what you are going to be doing in the UK.  Do you have a travel itinerary?  How are you going to spend a six month holiday?  You may well be questioned about this - six months is a long time for a 20 year old man to take out of his life with no pay, so it may need to be justified.  If you say that you are just going to stay with this friend for 6 months and have no real plans then I doubt you will be believed.

I would also be wary about giving any hint about a wish to stay long term, look for work, get citizenship etc.  If the IO even suspects that you will work while in the UK you will be refused entry.

ill be in a different country, whats not to do? What could be a better thing to do when your 20 years young?

would it be wise to print out some itinerary? Of all the places I would like to see?

Oh, and I know better than to tell IO about my future plans, lol im trying to get in the country not sent home. I guess I will have to make it very clear that I wont be wasting my 6month vacation looking for work. All im doing is taking a long vacation before I have to get involved in the real working world. I have an obligation letter in the mail from an employer stating that they expect me to begin training/working in February, which is when i plan to return home.

Im also working on getting some bank statements from my sponsor to go along with the letter they had sent me.

Afterall, I am playing by the rules, I really do not know why the IO would see a problem with it, but its better to know all of this ahead of time.
