Grace period
« on: July 13, 2009, 05:54:24 PM »
Hi.  My marriage VISA expires on the 15th of August.  Does anyone know if there is a grace period of any kind, or do you have to be out of the country on that date?  I have been perusing through all of these posts and see no mention.
Thanks!

You should really leave on or before the expiry date.  I don't think I've ever heard of a grace period for a marriage visa after it's expiry date.

If you intend to leave and not to apply for ILR, you must leave the country on or before your visa's expiration date.  If you don't leave on time then you are an overstayer which is not good.

It doesn't really matter in this case. Once the visa has expired the person is in the country illegally and will have A LOT! of explaining to do if ever trying to renter the country.

Best to go on or before it expires.

The only type of 'grace period' is if you're applying in the UK for another visa, this automatically extends your visa while your new application is being processed. If you have a spousal visa or a fiancee visa you can do this. But if you have a marriage VISIT visa you cannot switch in country and MUST leave the country on or before your expiry date.

That's why I was asking them which visa they were referring to :)

I think you also get some time to leave the country if you are made redundant or leave a job by some means while here on a work permit.  I think technically as soon as the job ends your visa is invalid, but you get some time to get moved out of the country and that is also a grace period of sorts.
