I have swine flu... :(
« on: July 14, 2009, 08:19:10 PM »
Don't worry you can't catch it from the computer...yet.

I am type 1 diabetic and a school teacher and so....viola....just a matter of time, really.

The GP gave me a prescription for tamiflu that took 2 hours to fill.

I haven't been able to force myself to take it yet though....my friend happily told me it made her vomit for 2 days straight (well...until she stopped taking it). So....I need to take it before bed tonight. I hate being sick so I just feel extra ill thinking about it.

I get married in like 2 weeks.

And I am having to call off the last week of work in the school year which does a lot for one's feeling of job security.  :-\\\\

Between being hit by  lorry in December and my partner needing serious surgery and having to take time off for it...I am feeling a bit unhappy about missing any school. I already accepted my offer for next year, so hopefully that will mean something.

I am throwing myself a pity party. Can anyone tell?

Hope you feel better soon and that it passes without incident.  :)

I had a filthy flu that floored me for two weeks recently -- I will never know now if it was swine flu as I didn't bother to see a doctor, but I certainly was ill and wiped out. It went around my social circle like wildfire, but we were all okay after it had passed.

Yeah, get better soon!  Just wondering, if the drugs make you throw up, then how do they get into your system and work?  Anyway, you probably should take them....

I'l join the pity party. Went home today at 3 because i was feeling really poorly (sore throat, achey, headache) and boss called me at 4 and tells me the person that sits directly across from me has tested positive for swine flu. Sending DH to get the drugs for me tomorrow.

Did they actually test you for it? Because my GP said definatly don't come in if you think you have it and dont go to the hospital... so im not quite sure how they'd diagnose me?

It was on the news a week or two ago that the UK is moving to a new phase in managing the flu thing...I think this means GPs are supposed to diagnose you over the phone now rather than testing you directly.  But it does sound weird doesn't it since it could just as well be regular flu or something else?  But better safe than sorry I guess.

Yes, for some time now they have been saying that in order to limit transmission to others, don't go to your GP, just call.

And yep it is also said that the symptoms are virtually indistinguishable from ordinary flu, carrying the same level of threat (or not) to those of underlying conditions or compromised immunity.

I think the common advice is to just get to bed and treat any flu you have like, well, flu, swine or not.

One of my friends from HS definitely has Swine Flu. She's been in isolation at the hospital for the past week and had flu and a staph infection, and today they confirmed it's Swine.

They spoke with me on the phone and even made me wake up my partner who was sleeping so he could go to work (he works nights and on those nights he sleeps during the day) in order to pick up and fill the tamiflu prescription.

The Dr.'s words were: 'based on your symptoms, you have swine flu until proven otherwise' and said that whilst she couldn't guarantee diagnosis - I am in a high risk group and should be treated as a positive. Plus, she was worried that I definitely not go to work because of the particular concern about the transmission rate with children.

The thing is that it is tricky....I have almost no fever (VERY low) and I thought that meant it was a cold. But the Dr. said that 1/3 of swine flu has no fever and then talking to a few people...lo and behold....loads of people have had it with no fever.

I suppose at least I didn't come down with it the day before my wedding or my flight out to Phoenix to see my son.

Thank G-d for small favours!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I needed a few people in my pity party!

Here's hoping it's really not and you're better in a few days! :D

Will the TamiFlu stuff knock out regular flu too?

Yep, Tamiflu's been on the market for quite a while! It helped clear up a nasty bout of flu my ex-boyfriend had four years ago.

I don't think it's usually prescribed very often though - back in April our pharmacy still had some left over from the bird flu outbreak a couple of years ago! However, with all the swine flu cases at the moment, it's been running out quickly. There are only a handful of pharmacies in our area who are currently stocking it and ours is one of them - today alone we had 50 prescriptions for Tamiflu (and now I'm getting paranoid about catching it because I work in the pharmacy section and serve potentially ill customers all day long)!
