Mexican in SW England
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:55:58 PM »
As a former SoCAL resident I love good Mexican food. My hubby lives in Somerset (Weston-super-Mare) and apparently there's a Mexican restaurant somewhere in town but I've not heard anything about it.

Does anyone know anything about getting some good tacos/burritos/margaritas in Somerset? TBH, I'm guessing its going to be something I'll have to make at home ;)

I'm in Bristol (so just a few miles north of Weston-Super-Mare) and we have a few Mexican restaurants here, but whether or not they'd be considered 'good' Mexican restaurants is debatable  ::). Personally, I quite like the Mexican food here, but then I'm British and it's what I grew up with - I didn't try any 'real' Mexican until I lived in New Mexico for a year when I was 20... and I really miss it now :( (the general consensus here on the board is that Mexican food in the UK is pretty bad and nothing like real Mexican food :().

For me, Mexican restaurants in england are kind of equivalent to when I tried to find Indian food in Pittsburgh.... It was KIND of the same, but just never quite right...

I miss Mexican food. I end up just making my own, but I miss the real authentic stuff!

I think I know what you mean, where I'm from in the states we have a huge Indian community but I've never had a better Indian takeout than what I've had in Weston(somerset).

Yeah, I guess it'll be like trying to find "proper" cider in the states....They try but its never as good. :)

To my knowledge THERE ARE NO real authentic or good mexican places here. I have to cook it all myself and even then I had to bring back stuff from the US because it's all fake weird crap at the store. Like El Paso?!?!? Gross. I have to make my own tortillas and everything from scratch.

I tried one place here in Barnstaple, ate one bite and pushed away the rest. All I have to do is read the menu's of the other places to know they are not "right". In fact DF and I went to Newquay and drove past a sign that read "The first real Mexican in Newquay" to which he replied "I think you're the first real Mexican in Newquay" lol.

I live in Somerset and the only Mexican restaurant I tried here was a horror.  The menu looked fine, but they just didn't get the ingredients or the preparation.

What I found is that although I quite like the taste of Mexican food in the UK, it's definitely not how it is supposed to taste - it's the UK idea of what Mexican food should be :P (similar to Indian food in the US).

I recently bought some 'enchiladas' from Marks and Spencer and only managed to eat one before giving up completely... I don't know who in the food division researched what they were and came up with that version, but I've never tasted any enchiladas like that before in my life. It was chicken strips in a creamy cajun-style sauce with indian spices (:o), wrapped in tortillas with a bit of cheese on top... not pleasant at all!!

GROSS!!!! That's like the "enchiladas" I had at the place in Barnstaple. I've found that one place in Camden Walk is so so.

I prefer the Indian food here to the US style. ;)

Very good example. :) We are moving back to the states eventually, and DH is very upset about the lack of proper cider....

My American-born son once ordered the "kids' quesadilla" at a Mexican restaurant in Cheltenham.  When it arrived it was a cold tortilla with a few baked beans and some shredded cheddar, with ketchup on the side.  My son actually quite likes beans-on-toast as well as proper quesadillas, but he hated that "quesadilla".  :P

I think, like some Chinese food, the differences in style of Indian might be down to which area of India people have immigrated from.

We had a large Indian community in Johnstown PA and they did a food night quite often.  I enjoyed the food, but it wasn't like "British" Indian.  But they were from India, they were cooking mainly for other Indians in the area, so no reason for it not to be authentic.

They had never heard of Chicken Tikka, because that is a British dish and I loved it.

Some local breweries make some good cider, but I think they tend only to sell it from the place.

There used to be one in Barnsley! The owner/chef and his wife were Mexican, they did authentic meals from their specific area of Mexico, and it was absolutely delicious, but they had to close down because they weren't getting enough trade. A great shame....I remember on one occasion when he came to our table and said that whilst they weren't on the menu he'd started doing fajitas and chilli con carne because people were asking for it....but the look on his face suggested he'd sold his soul!
