marriage visa-help!
« on: July 11, 2004, 10:30:15 PM »
Right now I am currently living in England on a fiancee visa. My fiance and I are getting married 9th of October this year. My fiancee visa ends on 14th of November. What forms should I complete and how long does it take to get processed? We are going to visit London at the end of October so is it best to go into the embassy to do it?? Are there any costs involved? Any information on marriage visas that you could give me would be great, my fiance and I are lost. Thanks!

You can download the form from the IND website www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk. If you go to the Home Office in person it can be processed while you wait, if you post it i think it takes a few weeks. I am not sure of the current fee, when my husband did his last year it was £250 approx for an in person application, cheaper if done by post, about £180 I think. Check out the IND website for the latest details. Don't stress too much, it's all very straightforward if you came here on a fiancee visa.  :)

In fact, you have to fill out less of the form if you came in on a Fiancee Visa, mostly the stuff dealing with the financial bits, as you've already had to provide that for the Fiancee Visa.

That's right. All you need to do is fill out the applicable portions of the FLR(M) form. All they'll want to see is your passport, your husband's passport, your birth certificate, and your marriage certificate. That's it.

Oh ... they'll want their money, too, of course.  ::)

If you do it by mail it will take a couple of weeks. If you go in person to the Home Office in Croydon (a helluva place to get to, by the way) you'll get it the same day (it's more expensive that way, though). Call ahead and make an appointment. Even with an appointment, it's still going to take at least 3 hours. (I was just there last week.)

Good luck.

It says on the FLR (M) form that processing it by mail can take up to 13 weeks (though they also say it "normally" takes 3 weeks!!! It's 250 v 155 to process it in person which I'm going to cough up just in case - my student visa also runs out a month before my wedding, so just to be safe I'm going to go in person.

Three hours in Croydon?  ::) Ugh. I hear the Birmingham office is a tiny bit less painful - anyone else had experience in that one?

Chris Hansen went to Birmingham a while back - the thread might be here somewhere, still...

Here it is!

My appointment in Croydon was at 2:30. We went through the payment process, and were speaking with an immigration officer by 3:00. It only took him 10-15 minutes to approve the visa, but the paperwork is then sent "upstairs" and that's the part that takes 2-3 hours. You just sit there and wait or you can go outside but WARNING. They close the building at 4:00 - if you are inside, you can not leave, and if you are outside (like my husband was in order to put more money in the parking meter) you can not re-enter! So there we were for 2.5 hours: I was inside waiting for my visa and he was outside in the car. Ugh!

When I left Croydon with my visa in hand, at 5:45pm, there were still about 100 people waiting to be seen.

If Birmingham is any quicker, I'd say go for it!

Best wishes.

Thanks for all your help everyone  :) I understand things a bit better now. However I have one more question....someone said I should fill out the FLR(M) form which is further leave to remain in the UK but there is another form, the SET(M) indefinite leave to remain in the UK. I do plan on living in the UK for good so which one would I fill out?? I would have thought I'd fill out the SET(M) form.

Pretty sure you have to have a FLR visa first, then after a period of time you can apply for an indefinite leave to remain. It's all a ploy to get paid for as many visas as possible, I think!  ;D LOL.

If you're on a fiance visa, your next stop is the FLR(M) for two years probation as a spouse, then you can go for ILR.  The alternate path for ILR as a spouse is to live with your husband for 4 years offshore.  Both paths lead to indefinite leave and ultimately to naturalization after 1 year.
