Can we visit the US air base in england as an american?
« on: July 27, 2009, 08:52:47 PM »
I was looking at a map of what the Mildenhall AFB has, and it shows they have taco bell, wal mart, dennys, olive garden, etc.. are americans allowed to go there and shop/eat?

I think you have to be like family members of military personnel to get a pass.

If they have a Target I'm going to have to marry one of the guys to get my pass.  ;D

We let ferriners enlist. We're good like that.

I think the "start your own Target" plan would run into the same problems Asda had, trying to bring Wal*Mart style shopping to the UK. With the best intention in the world, everything costs more here and there wasn't much downward pressure they could put on prices.

Ehh, that's okay, it wasn't going to work on a coupla grand begrudgingly loaned by the local Lloyds....more like the "Midnight Blue Pound Store"....!  ;D

Did you see that lady at Christmastime, who bought up the Woolworth's she'd worked in for years and ran it as a dollar store? Like that.

Err...shame about the military base idea, though. Just to knock this thread back in the original direction.

More on-topic to air bases:

When I was a much younger woman, I was part of a gigging band run by two Americans over here in London. One of the gigs they managed to book happened to be at the US airbase at Upper Heyford -- I have no idea if the place still operates today. The airbase was holding a contest/show to vote for a band to entertain at other US airbases overseas, and our band competed.

It was a ton of fun driving up there and taking part in the show with all the other bands. (It was a bit like being in the X Factor except this was the '80s and that show hadn't even been invented yet.)

It was also fun to be admitted into what was officially considered American soil! I even had to change my money into dollars in order to buy something at their onbase convenience store!! I was quite tickled by that, having not yet been to the US itself. It was a blast of a night.

it would be great if we as americans could go shop there. or if you knew someone who was stationed there, and could go onto the base with them.  i just want taco bell, dennys and stuff.

i did read today there is a taco bell in madrid... only an 18 hour drive from london!
