York - Food and Drink Festival in September
« on: July 29, 2009, 03:11:21 PM »
Has anyone been? Would you recommend it?
We are spending one night there - no idea where yet!

Any advice on the must see's and if the food and drink festival is worth it and what exactly it is...

thanks
Jenn

Can I make a recommendation for The Acer Hotel - lovely little B&B, and maybe it'll work on you as it did for us....as the day after we stayed there we went to Whitby and I proposed!
Anyway, I'm sure if your guy is a North East bloke he'll be very familiar with York and have a few places he'd like to show you but the place is just crammed with things to see. Just a walk around the city walls, or on the riverside, the museums, the Minister etc.
Don't forget to sample a York Brewery pub either!

p.s. enjoyed reading some of your posts, how you got together and waiting for meet-ups.....took me back to this time 2 years ago when I was a few weeks from my first visit to see my, now, wife.

TykeMan,

Thanks! Yes he hasn't been there in awhile so its kinda just fun to go! Yes this is all exciting but the time seems to drag and then speed up once we get together.

Blogging and Posts help to keep me sane ;-)

Note to self: York Brewery Pub!

Is it this one http://yorkfoodfestival.com/ ?  Because it doesn't look like it will really incorporate the history of York if that is what you are looking for or have you been to our fair city before?  I've seen this festival and it's nice but definitely not a headline event if you know what I mean.  You can probably incorporate some of it into your sightseeing if you want.

Yes that is the one...This will be my first time there and only spending one night...Just looking for ideas - I don't even know if the festival was worth planning our trip around those specific dates...

Have you been to it? I certainly want to walk the sites as I am so excited to just be there with the BF

I've been to quite a few of those pubs.  NICE!!!

To the OP, I have not personally, but I know of it and have seen when it is around town.  TBH, flipping through it, it looks like you'd only hit a few of the Historic bits, but if you just want something fun and low key and aren't bothered about doing the normal tourist things it could be fun but it doesn't seem like you'd see much.  If you'd like to see Historic parts, then you can always do one bit of it, see if it is any good and do some sight seeing with the rest of your time.  If you are more interested in sight seeing there's lots of little historic bits everywhere in York, and I can definitely give you a list of my faves and our go tos when my family visits.

Kinda the same topic :)

Zoyabean-I see that you live in Austin and I am going in September with my husband for 3 nights.  Any suggestions on what to see and where to eat (we are pescatarian) and anything that is a must?  Thanks so much!

Oh, where are you moving in the UK?  I live about an hour outside of York :)

Ohh ha I live in Austin and visiting the boyfriend in Durham and taking one night to go to York.
Ohh you will love Austin! So much to do and to fit in for 3 nights.
Seafood places such as sushi is big here...
Japon - is located right on the main highway (35)
Kenechi - is smack downtown and it gets crowded

Of course I would recommend Trudy's - best Tex Mexican EVER - I know they have seafood dishes but the salsa and queso is to DIE FOR!

As for activities:
1. Go see the congress bats http://www.austincityguide.com/content/congress-bridge-bats-austin.asp
2. If you have a car - go to The Oasis for the sunset - very romantic and excellent drinks (food is optional) Drinks and App's would be great!
3. A very Tourist thing to do is the Duck tour - my family loved it http://www.austinducks.com/

Feel free to PM me with any questions - Austin is HOT in September

Sarah,
I quite like The Ginger Man bar near UT in Austin.  And I'll ask my buddy that lives there what the name of the Mexican food we ate was, I think it may have been Trudy's as Zoya suggested.  ;D

aww The Ginger Man we went to...
There are tons of bars downtown that are great Fido's Irish Pub is neat - Cedar Door is excellent little place and we listened to live music...

I suggest doing what we did...Park downtown - go to The Ginger Man for a pre drink...walk over to Congress bridge to see the bats get there about an hour early (trust me) there is a starbucks in the Radisson (we grabbed iced coffee to wait) once over we kinda bar hopped on the way back...
Shiner Saloon is new and VERY cool on Congress/5th then went to Cedar Door then to Fido's

It was a great early night out
I think it may have been Trudy's as Zoya suggested.  ;D
I love me some Trudy's!

Totally depends on your wants.  Minister is nice and if nice, go up to the top... lovely!!  The walls are great.  I like the Jorvik Centre, it's out of the way and a bit cheesey, but I really find it fun, interesting and interactive with people always willing to talk to you.  I also like the Merchant Adventurers Hall, which does not have a lot in it, but it's still fun.  There's the Castle Museum which has the jail where Dick Turpin was held and is by Clifford's Tower, which I'm not sure I'd go in but you can.  There are Roman Baths and a pub above for a pint if you need it.  There's a card that you can get at the Baths or the Merchant Adventurers Hall that lets you into a few places cheaper.  Also, theres Museum Gardens.  The museum can be a little disappointing but the remains of St. Mary's Abbey in the gardens are lovely.

Those are some of my faves, but there's loads to do while you are here, so find stuff that you like.  Also, the ghost tours in the evenings can be fun!

Thank you persephone! I will for sure note all of these!  The ghost tour sounds like it could be different and maybe even a little fun ;-)
