The National Trust
« on: July 29, 2009, 10:19:51 PM »
DH and I are going to join the National Trust when I move over and I'm overwhelmed by the number of great locations to visit!   Can anyone share a few "cant miss" National Trust sites?  Any other members?
I put this in Travel and Transport since we would be doing some traveling to visit the sites, but if there is a better location, throw it there instead :)

TIA.

I know what you mean about all the great places.  We have belonged to The National Trust for 4 years and have not made a dent in visiting the different properties.

I think you are moving to Surrey, right?  Check out Ham House!  It is quite remarkable, and supposedly has their own ghost!

We have been members for for years as well Karrit :D

I've been to a few places in Surrey.  One I can remember (Sorry, not there at the moment with my book) is The Devil's Punchbowl.  Great views and walks.

Ooh, I can second the Devil's Punchbowl! We used to love going there when we lived in Hampshire. I didn't realise it was part of the National Trust, I thought they just did big houses and castles and structure type things.

I'm pretty sure it is. I think it's free for everyone, but if you put your membership card in the window of your car you don't have to pay for parking.

The Lake District! There's loads of NT properties as well as great big chunks of land.
We've been in February and November and loved it.

I'm a NT of Scotland member, but the fun thing is, you get all the benefits of NT stuff for England/Wales as well.

Historic Scotland is great too. I was able to get my group of 4 into Edinburgh Castle all for free, which more than paid for itself.  Next year, I will get all of Historic England places for free as well (which right now is a discount).

I think its nice to support these things and since I'm doing my fair whack of siteseeing, I think its worth it.

The National Trust does places (ie coastal areas, woods etc) as well as structures.  In general they seem to have more 'buildings' in the south and 'places' in the north.  On the other hand English Heritage seem to have more buildings in the North - or at least certainly in North Yorkshire.  I use both cards a lot and most castles and abbeys eg Middleham, Helmsley, Pickering, Richmond castles and Rievaulx, Byland and Fountains are English Heritage (Fountains is joint!).

I know my mother bought her sister an English Heritage card one year and she found it difficult to find places to visit in the south (near Maidenhead) so you might find National Trust better value if you're based below the midlands.

We made the most use of our National Trust membership when we visited Cornwall...and so little use of it living here in the Midlands that we finally dropped it, much as we love what they stand for and the properties we've seen are great!
