I need a cuppa... coffee
« on: August 03, 2009, 07:15:25 PM »
Hi guys,

Being back in the states I have been a bit spoiled with local bean roasting coffeeshops and I am already going through withdrawal of the bean even though I am not heading back to London for six months  ;D

I basically setup camp in Starbucks and the like but espresso is just not like a fresh cup of coffee.

Anyone know of any businesses what specialize in "fresh" coffee in the UK, maybe even ships to London? How to you get your coffee fix? Whittard's is the closest I have found.

I went to Harrods for the first time last week, and they roast their own. It looked excellent, and wasn't as expensive as I was expecting...

I've found a few tollerable coffees here, but I'm just too much of a coffee snob, so I have Peets shipped over. It's my monthly luxury....

Where in PA are you from?

I'm from Pittsburgh originally, but I went to IUP. We had the best coffee house called the Commonplace. They had an on-site roaster and it was just heavenly. Mmmmm.

Whole foods in Kensington?

Monmouth is really great as well if you just want to sit and chill, I'm often there on a sunday morning, or I was when I lived closer to the Borough market one :)

I'm probably really common, but I think the Nespresso machines make a great cup of coffee. I have a Tassimo, but I think the Nespresso is better. When my Tassimo breaks, Nespresso it is!

I wonder if Whole Foods in London carries Peet's Coffee like they do in the States.  I've always found Whole Foods to have a good coffee selection in general.  AnneR, you must be a Bay Area gal too!

I like Jacq's I think it is.  They do nice flavours in decaf for my dh.  He can't handle caffeine.

They sell online.

Try food markets - some have roasters....also specialist shops

Came across this place at the weekend in Lincoln, just mind boggling!

From what I heard as well it seems the proprieter really remembered his regulars

I actually don't like a lot of what is passed off as premium coffee here, including Harrod's own brand that they sell to other retailers.  We don't have a grinder yet, but it will be one of the first things I get for my new kitchen.  I've actually become really partial to a lot of the Sainsbury's Taste the Difference pre-ground line.  The Ethiopia Sidamo is pretty good (Yirgacheffe is my usual favourite, but I haven't found it reasonably priced here), as are some of the others.  It's trial and error.  They also sell bean coffee in this range.

Waitrose does some pretty nice beans, as does Sainsburys.

There are a couple of really good coffees at Starbucks. They do a Sumatra and their Arabia Moka Sanani is my favorite. I like my coffee strong.  :)
