I've seen liquid smoke at Stop and Shop before. I can't remember where, but I did see it. I had to hunt for it, though.

I need to make a Penzeys run soon. If you like pepper blends, the Chili 9000 is fantastic! Their pizza seasoning is delicious and I love to use it to help out jar pasta sauce if I have to use it. I got it as a sample, and now I buy it a lot. Their cinnamon sugar is the best! I like some of their blends better than others, but I don't think I've had anything I tried that I haven't liked. Very yum!!

Thanks, Belita and Stacey (and Q-G, of course)!  Can't wait to try it.

Penzeys looks AMAZING!!!  There is one out in the Island and in NYC, so next time I'm in the city, I'm heading there!  Thank you!

Duuuuude!  My last job was managing a Penzey's!!  My kitchen is FILLED with yellow-labelled bottles.

Oh, how I miss the free stuff.  So much free stuff....

I knew that was where you had worked AN,  well, I knew it was a spice store ;D

R, if you see the liquid smoke, let me know where you found it.  I'll check again at our SSS. (I can't say it without a Boston accent :P)

1 can haricot or pinto beans

You mean refried beans, right? ;)
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I don't think so. That's not how I understood Q-G's recipe. Just regular beans in a can so you don't have to soak. See the link I gave for the receta from Q-G herself.

Stacey, I'll definitely keep an eye out next time I go, I'm just not sure when that'll be.

ETA: I remembered I need some nail polish, so I'l go to S&S for it sometime this weekend and take a look. I still don't like their new look and yellow is such an unfortunate color for a lot of people to wear.

Looks like you've managed to work most of this out without me sticking my oar in last night!
For the 'stock', it's mainly flavour you want, not liquid... so i think that the demi glace sounds like it would work, as would the paste stuff that Melissa suggested.   Not too sure about reducing down regular chicken stock... my experience with that is that it just evaporates, rather than thickening.  I wouldn't put wine in it, but that's just my own personal preference... I never cook with wine.   I just don't see the value in wasting the wine when i can't really taste it in the food.   Maybe my palate isn't refined enough!

I assume Mort was joking about the refried beans, but for clarity... it's just regular white beans or pinto beans you want for this... including the thickened 'juice' from the tin (as long as its not got sugar in it).

Stacey, my sister and I went out to so some shopping today and the only mission we managed to accomplish was finding liquid smoke at Stop and Shop! It was in with the BBQ sauces. There was only 1 type (I think the other S&S I went to had two types) and was on the second highest shelf (the other S&S had it on the highest). So try the BBQ sauce section and look up high!

Sorry!  I forgot to respond to this!  THANK YOU! so much for looking for me!  I'm going in a few days and will look there.  I have some, but good to know I don't need to pay shipping for it on ebay.
