I bet it would be cheaper and easier to use wepakuship (or similar) to send your suitcases rather than pay the excess baggage fees.  I am traveling on United and the excess baggage fee is $200 per bag. wepakuship will send a 50lb suitcase or box for about that straight to my door in England.  Have you looked into this at all?

It's a good idea prince.je, but you are not guaranteed you would get all that luggage on as they do have restrictions to luggage allowance. You were lucky that day.

i was trying to imagine the driver's face when all this baggage turns up to be put into the hold!

Heh! I should have explained that we had six giant bags between the three of us - that's the airline's limit! R had been in the US prior to our flight to the UK, so he packed lightly so I could use most of his luggage space. We didn't have any more luggage than the average traveler.

ETA: airline's limit without paying for excess baggage, I mean.

yes, just wanted to add that you should be sure to read the luggage policy for the coach carefully... they allow two suitcases per passenger (my fiance booked my ticket and i didn't look it over closely enough) and unfortunately, the last time i came over, i had what the airline allowed: two checked suitcases plus a carry-on suitcase (i assumed a bus leaving from the airport would at least allow what the airlines do).  the driver of the coach literally SCREAMED at me and told me i was being selfish because "all the other passengers" needed space too (there were 8 other passengers that morning).  he made me stand aside in line so "all the other passengers" could go first and then only let me board after he made sure there was "enough space" for my extra carry-on.  he also made sure to point out to the other passengers how "naughty" i was trying to sneak an extra bag on board. he was awful.  i cried.  and then when i arrived in cambridge and my fiance met me, i cried again and told him i didn't want to move to a country where people were so mean.  luckily, i'm over it and ready to brave the coach once more in a few days...

Whoa, lilybelle.  :o I'm so sorry that happened to you! Was that on National Express? Their luggage policy is that carry-ons are fine so long as they fit in the overhead compartment. Whoever it was, screaming at you was completely out of line (and if it helps any, I would have cried, too - but then again, I blubber at the drop of a hat).

I'd rather ship, personally. Packing sucks. ;D
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

It was on National Express-- my carry-on did not fit in their overhead compartment, so I will admit that I, unknowingly, did need to put one more suitcase below than was allowed...but the thing is, that was what is allowed on the airlines and I needed to to bring all of those bags.  I would have been more than happy to pay a fee for the extra bag (or even to buy a second ticket!) but in all of his screaming, he never even mentioned that as a possibility, he only threatened to not let me ride at all.  I'll definitely pack differently for this next trip, at any rate.

There's a few taxi firms within Hastings that would be able to help with this by supplying a minibus, and I think a fare from a London airport to Hastings is around £60

a few to recommend +441424 247247 (247-247) +441424 441234 (New Carmiles)
