I found the website www.meetup.com to be helpful.  It shows you all the local meet up groups in the area (social, mother meet up groups, book clubs, outdoor hiking, etc.) 
I thought once I got all the bank account/cell phone stuff sorted, I'd be set...then I realized meeting people was harder than I expected.
