Where do i find Second Hand Household Goods/TV etc
« on: July 17, 2004, 08:52:43 PM »
Hi everyone.

Just moved in to a studio apartment in Hackney (East London)..looking to buy second hand entertainment gear and some household/Kitchen applainces...we basically just have a futon/table and four chairs.

If there are very good second hand stores that anyone recommends..please let me know.

Thanks guys.
Zufan
PS are pawn shops a good place to look for stuff ?

Loot and Ebay are the best places to look and look out for car boot sales and jumble sales.  There aren't many 2nd hand furniture shops around in London, unless you want an "antique." There used to be one over in Kilburn but not sure if it's still there. Also you could try Argos for cheap kitset furniture. You can go to your nearest store or online www.argos.co.uk

When hubby and I first got married we bought some ex-rental TVs places like Granada and Radio Rentals.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Pawn shops are good for stuff like stereos & TVs.  Not furniture.
I was just in a pawn shop yesterday, pawning my fax machine!

I just had another thought. haven't done this myself but I hear police auctions (ie where the cops auction off the stolen good they haven't been able to return to the rightful owner) are good places to pick up used electrical stuff. You will see them listed in your local paper from time to time.

Thanks everyone!

I will check be checking the pawn shops and police auctions, actually i live less than a block from a police station in Hackney.

Just had one more Q.
Where do they advertise the car boot sales ? is it on the Loot paper as well ?
Is there the equivalent of a flea market out here where it is a regular weekly event like back in the States ?

thanks in advance

Try the local papers for a listing of Car Boot Sales.  There is almost surely a weekly one in your area, which would be the equivalent of a flea market.

There are also markets in London...and at least one in East London.  Try Brick Lane market...Brick Lane, E1...open on Sundays from daybreak to 13:00.  You might be able to find something at Camden Lock Market, Buck Street, SE17.

Hi There,

We are moving back to the states and we need to get rid of alot of kitchen appliances among other stuff as well.  We are taking very little back home.  If you are interested send me a message.  We live in Southampton, which isn't too far from you.

Thanks,

Melanieb
