You may want to try asking this at BritishExpats.com or DiveintoAmerica.com since we don't really have much knowledge on US to UK immigration issues and just a little bit really in the Repatriation forum.

My husband abandoned his greencard at US airport immigration last year. He was told that he wouldn't have any problems getting a greencard in the future. That abandoning is the correct procedure, and only works in your favor.

How much longer would you have to stay in the US to obtain your citizenship?

If it's not ages, you might want to tough it out until then.

My husband abandoned his green card in 2005 (at the time we thought we were moving back but plans changed due to my job). We reapplied in early 2007 in order to move back to the states....no problems at all.

well my wife could have applied for citizenship but she didn't want to...and I had the time wrong, it's 3 years not 5.  in any case i wonder if immigration will even notice that we've been gone for almost 2 years...kind of dumb though, surrender green card and apply again next day, just for us to get another green card about 6 months later.  stupid law i tell you.  all because we weren't aware of the rules.  stupid we are...

Why won't you have to provide an affadavit of support? You will be applying for permanent residency again - you will have to meet the same conditions as before.

i don't have to but my wife does,  i don't need to show tax returns or proof of income.  she's worked in the states before and that's why she can do the i-864w much less hassle, just need an earnings statement from irs.

As long as she qualifies and can show that then there should be no problem.
