Discrimination in car renting
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:08:53 PM »
An interesting read.

AGE OF DRIVERS
UK Drivers must be over 21 and not over 76 years of age, American, Canadian and Foreign National Drivers must be over 21 and not over 70 years of age. In the case of Groups 7 & 8, the minimum age of drivers is 25 years. Additional drivers can be included at no extra charge by arrangement.

Why?

In the US you pay a substantial surcharge is you want to rent a car and are under 25, and most placed won't even rent to you if you're under 21.

It's usually just prohibitive to insure younger drivers is all.

Not to drag this topic in a nasty direction, but from the profit perspective it's as easy to understand why insurance companies won't give rental insurance to young people as it is the reason why they'd yank health insurance from sick people: it costs too much compared to what it makes.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

And then there is the extra charge or double for heavy people on airplanes.

In your example...In the US insurance companies red line neighborhoods when setting rates.

Jim, what are you on about?  It started with rental car age restrictions, moved quickly to airline obesity and then swung back to rental cars, but this time something about where someone lives.  I can't follow it.

I had the same experience.  Under 25 with a US license was REALLY expensive.

I always assumed it had something to do with regular car insurance rates dropping at age 25, as you're considered an "experienced driver" by then.  Since the insurance is higher for an under 25 driver, the car rental company has to charge the under 25 person more.  (off topic a bit, but IMHO, it should be more like after having your license for x number of years with no accidents. I got my license at 23, and got my insurance lowered at 25. I was grateful, but I didn't feel like an "experienced driver"!)

When we were in college, my friend would rent through rent-a-wreck because they were always cheap, even with being under 25, so that might be an option if you don't mind a clunker!
