Flights to US
« on: August 21, 2009, 11:28:50 AM »
It's my first flight back and we are leaving on 20th November. I am looking at BA from Newcastle to Dallas (layover at Heathrow) for £1045 per person with return. Is this pretty standard? Are there other airlines you would recommend? Just want to see if I am getting the best deal available. Thanks!

I would think you could find a MUCH better deal than that.  We are going back to the states for Christmas and got direct flights on British Airways for less than that.  When we went back for Thanksgiving last year and when DH came out to visit for Thanksgiving the year before we were able to find really reasonable flights, I think for $400-500 DOLLARS each.

Look at http://www.kayak.co.uk - it's a site that compares a bunch of different airline and discount websites.

For some reason, prices to Dallas have been ridiculous lately. I haven't been able to find anything for under $800 searching the next coming six months.

HAHAHA... ok, DH just tells me that price quote was for both of us, not per person.  :P I guess I read his email wrong. Anyway, I guess that does sound pretty good then, no?

It still sounds crazy high to me.  :-\\\\  I just found £477 per person on KLM, Newcastle->Amsterdam->Dallas.  I've been flying them quite a lot lately as they fly from Teesside and change in Amsterdam - Schipol is quite good as airports go and they have direct flights to everywhere I've wanted to go so far (Atlanta, DC, Singapore).  Definitely worth looking into!

My route is from Manchester Airport to Houston, and I tend to pay between £400 (if the exchange rate is really good) and £500 (if the exchange rate is bad) per person including taxes/fees.

My route is from Manchester Airport to Houston, and I tend to pay no more than about £400 maximum per person in total.

Also an option!  I find though that the extra convenience of not having to take the train anywhere plus not having to stay overnight anywhere (both things I have to do to fly from Manchester) is often worth the extra £££.

You quoted me while I was editing! :P  Anyway, edited my post to reflect the fact that I buy my plane ticket in dollars so the price fluctuates with the exchange rate.

And totally agreed about the convenience thing- Manchester is just a short train ride away from me so it's the most convenient (except if flying on a Sunday morning, never again!)  I don't fly out of Heathrow/Gatwick for the same reason, Meg.

Yeah, Manchester would be a bit too far, though we had considered flying out of Edinburgh. Newcastle is definitely most convenient. It's a much shorter drive home when you are already tired from the long trip. That KLM flight sounds pretty good, but I've never flown with them before. How is the service? DH and I both refuse to fly AA again because the attendants are so rude and the flights are so crowded (we flew with them the first few times and each had bad experiences.) I flew BA when I moved here and was much happier with their service (plus, free drinks, better food, and a few less seats on the plane, so the flight felt less crowded) so that's why we were looking at flying BA again. I might look into KLM, though, I didn't know that would be an option from Newcastle to DFW, so thanks!  :)

Whew!  That is a bit better and for Thanksgiving time, possibly the best you can do.  Have a great trip! :)

I do the KLM flight from Teesside > AMS > DC quite a lot.

KLM are right up there with the other big European carriers in my book. Helps that they're partnered with Delta/NWA too, since most of my connections work with them, and all my miles are Delta. The flights are full, but not overcrowded. Drinks are still free (for now) and there aren't the sort of luggage charges that some US carriers are starting to impose.

£500 per person seems to be about the going rate. I just booked at trip for Oct that is a bit more, but it includes a domestic leg from DC to CA, and return from Portland, OR.

Jewelz - that is almost the flight I am on - Austin, Detroit, Amsterdam to Newcastle...
I know sheateawholepie did it but started from San Antonio on Saturday...

I love Delta/Northwest and never had a problem but the only thing I recommend is get a World Perks card! I have 20K in miles (thanks to people buying my miles for my birthday) so you can fly half cash and half miles - which is how I am getting there for New Years.

Average I have found is about 840-940 which included taxes.  BA seems to have higher taxes and they pair with AA a lot.

ALSO AA won't take miles for award tickets to the UK b/c they use BA..

I booked flights for Christmas from Glasgow to Philadelphia (stop in Heathrow there, Manchester back) and paid a total of USD$1600 for the two of us, inclusive of all fees, taxes, kickbacks, etc. I definitely think that £1000 is expensive if it is for one person.

Hi Jewlz,

I live in Newcastle also and I know they tend to hike up the prices out of our tiny little airport here.  As a result, its the outbound flights (ie geting out of Newcastle!) that can be the bottleneck to all travel plans.  My company sends me out a lot and I've gotten good at finding flights out of NCL for el cheapo.  Plus Thanksgiving is a tough time. Someone told the Brits about our holiday   ;) See if the below fits.  It is for just one person. Price quotes is £503.50 per person, regular economy seats:

Newcastle (NCL - Newcastle)
Dallas (DFW - Dallas Ft Worth)
American Airlines 6721
American Airlines 51
 1 Connection (LHR) 20 Nov 06:20 - 14:25  Economy Restricted e-ticket 14h, 05m

Dallas (DFW - Dallas Ft Worth)
Newcastle (NCL - Newcastle)

American Airlines  78
British Airways  1332
 1 Connection (LHR) 30 Nov 19:45 - 14:00 + 1 day(s)  Economy Restricted e-ticket 12h, 15m

Hope this helps!

cheers
