Movies about the UK or Visiting?
« on: August 25, 2009, 04:27:19 AM »
My mom wants to watch movies about the UK/visiting the UK since we leave in three weeks.

The problem I'm running into is that all the movies I can find are specifically about people who visit London (except for the brief scene in European Vacation where they knock down Stonehenge).  Not that London isn't a great place, but once you've watched one teen movie where they go to London on a school trip and fall in love you've seen them all!

Does anyone know of any movies about people who visit the UK but aren't based around London?

Billy Elliot and The Full Monty come to mind.

This link might help a bit.

I know it's set in London, but I watched Love Actually just before moving to the UK and I think it's a really fun film about the UK.  Has lots of relevant/accurate representations of life in the UK.

The Holiday

Do you get BBC America? My mother (who has never been to the UK) was telling me all about a full English breakfast because she's addicted to watching BBC America, lol!

Brideshead Revisited, Pride and Prejudice, Calendar Girls, Hot Fuzz (filmed in Wells, Somerset), Gosford Park.... there are lots and lots.

Yes but unfortunately the op's mother will be visiting in the present day, not in Jane Austen or Evelyn Waugh's time.  ;D

Your Mom may like The Calendar Girls.  It captures the Yorkshire Dales and its people very well and should make her laugh (and cry!).

That's a good suggestion. I think a person would be able to get a better sense of what the UK is like from television than from films, to be honest.

LOL!

My first thoughts were a couple of Ken Loach films.  Even worse!

Haha, yeah...a great one to show Mom! ;)

One movie I haven't seen, but I know is set in London, is Last Chance Harvey.  Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are the stars, it's set in London...and that's about the extent of my knowledge about this one!
