LOL!

My first thoughts were a couple of Ken Loach films.  Even worse!

Maybe we should do a list about movies that would make you NOT want to come to the UK.

True...

OP, does she want gritty reality?  (Sweet Sixteen, Red Road, My Name Is Joe, Carla's Song...)

Or nicey-niceyness?

What about the Holiday with Kate Winslet & Cameron Diaz, I turned it off after about 10 minutes, but it was a huge hit, so other people must have liked it.

What about documentaries, like Simon Schamas 'The History of Britain'.

One movie I haven't seen, but I know is set in London, is Last Chance Harvey.  Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are the stars, it's set in London...and that's about the extent of my knowledge about this one!

I saw this one back in June with DH and we both loved it.

We do watch a bunch of BBC shows- Doctor Who, Torchwood, Gavin & Stacey, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes.

I don't think she'll sit through a documentary, to be honest.

She's just getting really excited and wants to submerse herself in all things remotely British, know what I mean?  It's her first trip outside of North America, her first passport, etc.

Calendar Girls sounds interesting, especially since we'll be spending a few days in Yorkshire....and would you believe I've never seen trainspotting?

I didn't even get that far!  I picked up the cover in Blockbuster.  Saw the photos of Jude Law, Jack Black and Kate Winslet . . . promptly put it back on the shelf.

I sat through the whole thing. There ought to be some sort of medal for that.  :P

especially since we'll be spending a few days in Yorkshire

Where else are you going?

That's a good suggestion. I think a person would be able to get a better sense of what the UK is like from television than from films, to be honest.

I agree.  I always find documentary shows much more informative than made up Hollywood style movies.

Yeah, but movies are so much fun!  I love documentaries, but find that movies really capture my imagination. What was that other movie, similar in style to Calendar Girls, about a woman who was growing pot in her garden in Cornwall?  That was a good one!

Yes, more crap fantasy to dupe people.

How about Ladies in Lavendar with Judi Dench? Really shows off Cornwall beautifully.

I just watched one called Keeping Mum that was pretty funny.  It's kind of a dark comedy with Maggie Smith, Rowan Atkinson, Kristen Scott Thomas, and Patrick Swayze.  I think it was filmed in Cornwall.

The UK section of my DVD collection contains mostly TV shows and few films:

Spaced
Shaun of the Dead - my mom liked it, which says a lot
Hot Fuzz - bring the noise
Big Train
Confetti - the only rom com in my entire collection
The Office
Extras - a huge hit with Sis and BIL, parents were more meh
Ricky Gervais stand-up - not for the modest
Black Books - black indeed
Dylan Moran stand-up
Little Britain Live
24 Hour Party People -
Tristram Shandy - a clever film with Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan
Saxondale - much like Curb your Enthusiasm in terms of the squirm factor
Monty Python box set
