Yeah, because for people like me, whatever is causing this (and you're probably right julie.bug!), I can't even get online to fix it.
Vista has a nifty restore feature.  I think julie.bug might have used it.  You can take your computer back to the way it came from the factory.  This is always the best way and you can also choose to keep your files but it's better to wipe it.

I bought it a couple of years ago from Comet.  It's a long way away and even longer with three little kids in tow.

Think I might just flog it to the local IT shop and get something else that's not fecking Vista because now I can't even get online at all from it.

There's nothing I really want to keep on it because I never put anything on it.

Let's face it: Microsoft Windows is garbage.  It's been garbage since day one.   Each new version just substitutes one set of problems for another.  It's been relatively cheap and it's Microsoft, which just about explains why it became the de facto O/S for consumer PC's, but why it gets used so extensively in any sort of serious business environment beats me.

It's ridiculous that 30 years ago we could run an entire application on a couple of floppy disks and 64KB of RAM, yet an equivalent Windows application today demands a minimum of 50MB of disk space and 256MB RAM to even load.  And in some cases the program runs slower on a whizz-bang multi-gigahertz processor today than it did on a 2MHz Z80 because of all that extra overhead.  "Bloated" doesn't even begin to describe it.

I liked that other picture of your cat better.  That one where he's showing off his cute front paws.

I've already spent too much on this f*&^ng laptop.  I'm not paying anyone any more money to fix it.

It's going up for sale.

I like Windows a lot, and up until yesterday was using XP on my old faithful Toshiba that has done me great service for more years than it ought to have. I've used Macs in the past and vastly prefer PCs ... but that's just me. I'm now in the market for a new PC, however, and I really don't want this Vista that everyone's complaining about! My DH has Vista, and doesn't seem to mind it, but he doesn't use his laptop nearly as much as I do. I've heard good things about Windows 7, though, and I think I might go for a Dell with Windows 7 upgrade eligibility. My monitor just died and I can't really wait until late October until Windows 7 is officially released. Talk about bad timing.  :-\\\\

rynn_aka_rae, tell me what's so great about Windows 7, please!  :)

Yep.  Ever tried keeping old DOS applications running when the people insist that they just "must get Windows XP" on the system?    I must have spent more time trying to iron out the bugs caused by the "compatible" DOS mode than I did writing the original DOS application.  Well, almost.....  :P

Like the way that Windows so cripples the original DOS file system that you'd better not have any file names of the form PRN*.* because it will ignore everything after the first three characters and try to send to the printer port!

Definitely, Paul!  He looks like a possessed hellcat in your icon right now.  :o

Paul, I have a black cat exactly like yours! I call him my little panther too -- or my little monkey depending on how misbehaved he's being. (He opens doors, cupboards, drawers with his paws... :o )

Windows 7 is currently a beta so you can download it from the Windows website I believe if you wish to try it out. A few months after I got my first laptop, my computer with vista installed got a bug so DBF put Windows 7 on it. A far as I know, it can run vista programs, but I have had no problems with it. I find Windows 7 runs a bit faster than vista and less annoying to use. I do rather like the taskbar and how I can disable those annoying notifications. I wonder how much I will like it or how much it will change when I start paying for it though...
