Deciding to bring my JRT to UK...
« on: August 30, 2009, 08:23:07 PM »
I have decided to give my little Jack Russell Terrier to my mother when we leave, but in watching her play this morning, I really got sad at the prospect of having to leave her behind.

She is just now a year old and we bought her to replace a dog that was given to my children for Christmas.  Now I am thinking how sad they'll be that they lose another pal and wondering how long it will be for I can fill my void.  I love animals and consider a dog a must-have, but my husband can take them or leave them.  If it costs too much I know he'll make me leave her behind. :\\\'(

Where's the best place to get information about moving her, including costs and procedures?  Wondering if it's worth the cost or better to know she's going to be loved by my mom and not shut away in quarantine for moths on end.

It cost me about $1800 all in to move my two dogs.  I would assume about half of that for your little one.  Look about on the Pets board as there is loads of information on the PETS scheme and lots of us here that can help answer your questions.

I am so glad that I brought mine with me!

Start here for the basic information: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/

I'm not sure when you're moving, but if it is inside of 7 months (if you haven't started the pet scheme yet), could you leave the little guy with your mom to wait out quarantine in the US?  That would save a bundle in quarantine fees in the UK!

As Ophinky says, if you still have about seven months left, you have time to start on the PETS Scheme, which is a process by which there will be no need for your dog to be put into official quarantine in the UK, as he will be in a process of proving himself free of rabies during a "non-quarantine" quarantine right at home in the US. The Pets board has all the info on the process.

Years ago there was no alternative but to place US animals into quarantine kennels in the UK upon arrival. But the PETS scheme means you don't have to do this anymore as long as you have the six to seven months it takes to fulfil the requirements before entering the UK.
