banks that are expat mortgage friendly?
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:24:17 PM »
I know that people have mentioned in the past that there are some banks that are more expat friendly when it comes to offering mortgages.  Any ideas about what those banks might be?  Anyone want to mention where they've had luck?

I think it depends on your situation.  I am married to a British citizen; so, we had a bit more luck for that reason, I think.  The banks that were willing to make us offers were: NatWest, HSBC (who we bank with), and Abbey.  We should be getting our formal mortgage offer this week and completing on our house in two weeks.

Me and DH bought our house and May and despite all the doom and gloom on the news, there are still a lot of mortgage options if you have at least a 10% deposit (we had 15%). Your unlikely to get anything reasonable without at least 10% though. The bank also asked if I had permanent residency (ILR), which i did at the time but I dont know if they would have approved me without it.

My best advice is to go see a mortgage advisor. Alot of estate agents have them in-house. We went to see one that worked through Reeds Reins and she basically typed our details into her computer and told us who could give us the best mortgage. Then we just completely bi-passed her, because she charged a £500 fee, and we then went to the bank she said could give us the best deal.

The initial appointment with her was free.... she just charged for being a middle-man between you and the bank and you and the estate agent, which you really dont need.

Best of luck!  :)

Lots of banks wouldn't talk to me because I don't have ILR. I gave up for now.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!
Work permit (2007) to British Citizen (2014)
You're stuck with me!

That was our issue because I don't have it; but, since DH is a British citizen, they couldn't discriminate against him.  If I was on my own, it never would have happened.

Congrats on the house Dar! How exciting!  :)

Thanks!  :)
