Yes we are in DALSTON...not Dawston...sorry :)

Thanks again for all those colorfull responses. I think at this stage i need to clarify a couple points . I happen to be black american...i am a total city dude and for those who really understand what i am saying...its not the color of your skin when i refer to " home grown brits " but more the upbringing/culture/attitude etc. London appears to be about cultural separation as opposed to cultural integration...hardly any mixed couples, another shocker for us. We are a mixed couple, wife is Austrian American...so we are looking at this from many different angles .

Hope i havnt ruffled more feathers...but hey its a free country aint it ?

I'd just like to say that I think this is a bit of a lesson for us all. It's very easy to misinterpret what people are saying or where they are coming from just based on a couple of posts. Usually we do a pretty good job on this board. I think zufan's posts were a bit confusing, but I think we all were a bit too willing to think the worst of what he was trying to say.

Not sure I'm making any sense here...
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Well I still am not sure what a Brit is supposed to look like, cause Zufan, you did say that you didn't see many homegrown Brits around, isn't that a bit like me going to Harlem and asking where all the Americans are because I was expecting a town full of Roseanne Barr lookalikes? anyway clearly Hackney/Dalston is not where you want to be, which is fair enough,  so I hope you and your wife find an area where you feel more comfortable.

The good ol' 2001 Census tells us that Britain has one of the highest rates in the world of inter-ethnic relationships and, consequently, mixed race people. Indeed, the fastest growing ethnic group in Britain is mixed-race.

Here's a BBC News article with has a lot of comments at the bottom from Brits replying to the question "What makes you British". You may find it interesting:

Zufan, it's going to take you longer than the time you've already spent here to understand what a "home-grown Brit" actually is, and whether you actually want to live beside one. But in the meantime, if Dalston has some deal-breaking characteristics that makes it unliveable for you, then of course you should move elsewhere.

And yes, Britain is a free country to those who can afford it, just like the United States.  :)

Now that's interesting ... Mr Nibbles I had a look at that link and it would appear that a lot of people think if you are born in the UK then you are British, but according to the government this is not the case, because as I understand it  you are not automatically a British citizen if your parents aren't British even if you are born here.

Hi everyone...sorry if my posts confused any of you...yes i agree that i will need to spend more time here to measure the pulse of this city . I really Appreicate everyone's input , i know you are all trying to help . I think visiting london and living here are two different things . I had a totally different impression of london when we were here two years ago .

My wife and i are both fed up with living in the states so we will try and make it work here...i think its do-able but it will depend on what sort of jobs we will end up with .

thanks to all who responded.
