Chocolate Chips
« on: September 03, 2009, 02:44:54 AM »
So everywhere we go there are premade chocolate chip muffins, crossiants, cookies, etc.   So clearly it is a popular choice.  But in each store there are only small containers of Chocolate Chips in the baking section and they are way overpriced.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Even at Costco they were in a larger container but they were nine pounds forty.

If you want more than a few ounces of chips for a reasonable price where do you go?

I have never seen anything more than what you've probably seen.  Dr. Oetker's chocolate chips in small bags, and overpriced.  I use the "plain" ones (have to get a few bags for one batch) which seem to be about the same as "semi-sweet" in the U.S.  It will be useful if anyone can point you in the direction of a larger quantity....

Last time i was in Costco (about 18 months ago) they had big plastic tubs of Belgian choc chips and it was only £5.99  :-\\\\

Those are the ones we use for cookies, etc, too.  I haven't bought any in a few months but I know they weren't nearly a tenner when I did!  :o

And to think I used to eat them by the handful back in the US!

What about Jullian Graves? They might have them.

I just bought these in Costco yesterday.  They're like £5.90 or something like that for a big tub.  Not cheap but it'll save me buying the tiny bags for a while.
BTW, when I was home in August I didn't find grocery type stuff cheap at ALL.  I looked at chips and they seemed really expensive to me there.

Buy bars of chocolate and hack it up into chunks. It's MUCH nicer than hard little chips and makes for gooey-er and smoother chocolate in baking. I did this in the US too.

I'll second this. It's nice to get the kind of chocolate you want for your cookies and dead easy to split the bars into chunks. Yum!

I couldn't agree more. DH has remarked how expensive groceries are there as well. I only stock up on stuff that I absolutely 100% cannot get here and can't find a substitute for.

I'd go with Chary's suggestion.

Or if you really only need cookies for an emergency fix (I don't have a big sweet tooth, so the only time I bake is when I get a craving that I just can't shake) get a box of Ghirardelli cookie mix from Costco.

I agree that groceries in the US are now crazy-priced -- much more so than when I lived there.

It may be blasphemy but I eat far fewer choc chip cookies here than I did in the US, and my waistline thanks me for it.  :P

Yeah, $4 for a bag of choc chips aint great. I always stock up on peanut butter and butterscotch chips though, as well as loads of Bakers coconut and large marshmallows...

and large marshmallows...

They've got those at the Watford Costco right now. Not sure how dear they are 'cause I didn't look 'cause they're vile.  ;)  ;D  :-*

Oh, and I couldn't find Crisco....

Thanks for looking, poppet. Suppose there isn't a need for it over here.

I can take or leave marshmallows, but the petite princes are rather addicted to roasting them...however, think it might be safe to say BBQ weather is kaput now.

I just saw some reasonable priced ones at ASDA today. Still the smaller bags, but they were only something like a £1.50 - dark chocolate, mild chocolate and white chocolate.
