Things I never knew I missed until I started reading this forum...
« on: September 06, 2009, 10:09:07 PM »
Okay, I have lived in the UK for 10 years and never used to bring so much foodstuffs back with me, until I started reading this forum.

For instance, I never ate Ranch Dressing in my life, I am a bleu cheese or greek salad kind of lady, however since realising I couldn't get it in the UK (and since joining this forum) I always bring some back with me! I had no idea I was missing it on carrot sticks!!!

Tell me I'm not the only one who didn't even know I was missing something!!! Please...

Our sainsbury's is now carrying Newman's Own Ranch dressing.

I bought a packet of those French's Onions when I saw them in our local farm shop last year even though I've never used them before.  They're still sitting on my shelf.  I'm like that with pumpkin mix too.  I don't really want it but I think I should so I buy it.

OMG those are another two things I never ever used in the states, but here, I can't seem to live without them!!!

Yeah, I do get twinges of desire here and there. Like someone mentions Crackling Oat Bran or PF Chang's and I swoon over the thought for a few minutes. Even though I didn't eat those things very often.

You can buy Kellogg's Crunchy Oatbakes here, which are the same as Cracklin' Oat Bran!

Yeah, I read your post on that, so I looked everywhere for them and couldn't find them. Which made me want them BAD.  :)

I've only found them at the much larger Sainsbury and Waitrose in my area.

Never had brand loyalty regarding Ranch dressing while in the US, but now that I've tried Cardini's and even Newman's Own when I discovered I could find it here, I don't like either, and I miss plain old ordinary Hidden Valley Ranch or Kraft Ranch.

Yeah, neither of those are very good, IMO. Too much vinegar. I brought loads of HVR packets with me when I moved thinking I would eat it all the time, but I still have loads of them left. Maybe it doesn't go as well with the food here? I think I just forget to make it, or maybe I want some, but I don't want to make a big container's worth. Plus I made it with mayo and milk, according to the packet, but it tasted funny to me for some reason. I do like to mix it in with creme fraiche as a nice dip for crisps and veg once in a while. My stepson loves it!!! But usually I'm just satisfied with HP for my fries, even though it used to always be ranch.

Other than chocolate chips, and I really can't be a*sed breaking up a bar of chocolate and now had no access to a Costco (although I tried the chips out of there and found them tasteless), and Amy's and Morningstar, the things I miss are seasonal.  Like Williams-Sonoma pumpkin and those crispy onions at Thanksgiving.

But on the whole, I can't remember a lot of foodstuffs and as I haven't been there in so long, it will be like looking at it with new eyes.

I do long for Newman's Own microwave popcorn and would love more regular access to salsa verde.

As I have little tolerance for lactose, though, I found a lot of American foods too creamy and cheesy to eat even when I was there.

Check the salad dressing shelf. They're there!  :)
