Mexican food and other randoms
« on: September 08, 2009, 03:54:01 AM »
I am stocking up before I head over. I am a Mexican food lover (though vegetarian) and I am wondering if I could find refried/black beans over there? How is the sour cream, similar to US? I am stocking up on taco seasoning as well.
I also am wondering if they sell "meatless" chicken nuggets over there?
Also, Buffalo Wing Sauce. I know that is a random thing but I make this killer buffalo "chicken" wrap!
Also, I started to think about Thanksgiving and if you can find things to make pumpkin and/or pecan pie with, biscuits, etc?
I know this is a lot of questions but I appreciate your feedback on any of these items! Thanks!

There are loads of vegetarian mock  chicken products here so I'm sure you can find something like the nuggets yyou want. Black beans are available in most large supermarkets. Refried beans are eveywhere.  Taco seasoning is available but may not be the same as you're used to. The main brands of Mexican ingredients found in supermarkets here are Old El Paso & Discovery.  You can get brands like La Costena and La Preferida from Lupe Pintos in Edinburgh & Glasgow or by mail order from them or mexgrocer.

Yes, there is sour cream available and it works fine. No to buffalo wings. You're better off finding a good recipe for the sauce and doing it yourself.

Pumpkin pie in a can is a bit trickier. You're better off bringing one yourself rather than hitting the panicky search brigade that happens in November around here.....some places might carry it, might not...

Pecan pie..well there is no corn syrup so if you can bring some, then do. I substitute using golden syrup and it's very similiar with no problems.

Biscuits? If you mean like the pop up can type, no. Again, better off mastering making your own. It's dead simple. Better H & G have a great recipe that is foolproof.

I have seen buffalo wing sauce - but it's pretty hard to come by in some areas. I'd bring a bottle or two just to get you going, then look around for some, or learn to make your own.

Taco seasoning is dead easy to make yourself. Honestly. It's better that way, too, because you end up with less sodium and no MSG. Just mix chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, a dash of salt, and a touch of cayenne pepper (however you like it) and you have taco seasoning. All those spices can be bought here.

Enchilada sauce can be made here, too. It's also very easy.

Biscuits you will have to learn to make yourself. You can't find them here.

Refried beans are everywhere, spicy or regular, and pretty good. Black beans seem to be found by others, but I have yet to find them in my area. They are a bit more difficult to find and you may have to go to several stores before you spot them. Soured cream is available here, it isn't exactly the same as what you get in the states, but it is ok. Just be sure to buy the stuff in the refrigerated section and not in the jar on the ambient shelf by the taco shells and stuff. Ewwww.

Veg nuggets and things are easy to find. I think there are actually more alternatives for vegetarians here.

Pecan pie is fine to make with golden syrup instead of corn syrup. I used a recipe from the BBC site last year and it came out just great. For pumpkin pie, I would suggest bringing a tin of canned pumpkin or whatever you need. It's very hard to find in some areas.

For Mexican food, I would consider bringing some tins of green chiles and/or Rotel, if you are into that. You won't find those here. Also, if you like to make "white man's queso" with Velveeta, I would suggest bringing some Velveeta with you, you won't find that here, either.

I am noticing that more and more supermarkets carry Franks hot sauce these days, Sainsbury’s had it this weekend (I always keep a bottle on my desk so I can douse anything I eat with it num num) I say bring a bottle to hold you over, but once you see it in a shop, buy lots! Some supermarkets have the tins of pumpkin, but not all. At the moment my local Waitrose doesn’t even have any! You can get refried beans in most supermarkets, and black beans, well imo they are better if you soak and cook them yourself. The ones I have gotten in a tin here are a bit mushy for me. I soaked some and cooked them this week and they were perfection (I can’t wait until lunchtime today so I can eat my leftovers!!!)

LOL! I've seen those, too. I have seen black beans in the bag. I think I really should cook some up myself and just freeze the leftovers or something.
