iPhone email set up question
« on: September 10, 2009, 03:57:07 PM »
This is a silly question, but I'm trying to set up my work email on my iPhone.  I can't figure out what to put in the space that asks what my server address is!  I have tried a few things but is there any way I can figure out what it is on my own (i.e., without asking our IT people)?

If you have an email client on your PC you could go into the settings and see which server it is using.

The address may or may not work depending how the network is set up (re. intranet, aliases etc.)  If you have an email client set up for off-site access you have a better chance.

I did try doing looking in the settings on my email client, but I couldn't find it.   :P

And we do have off-site access through Novell, but again I'm not quite sure how to identify it.

We use Groupwise (don't get me started) so it's probably just that I'm not familiar with where the info is located.  :P

Does your IT department allow you to, say, get your work email from your home PC?  A lot of companies do not allow outside access to their email servers.

They only allow it via the secure website, I think?

geeta,

I know this doesn't exactly address your problem but wanted to give you a heads up that if your company uses exchange, hold off on downloading the new 3.1 software to your iphone as consumerist is reporting that people are having problems connecting to exchange servers via iphone using the new software.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Thanks, Mort.  I think I am going to break down and ask IT about whether they allow access or not.

Groupwise?

Sorry, missed where you said that earlier.   :-[

I've never used it, but according to the results of a couple of quick searches:

Mail menu -> Preferences -> Accounts

Then click on "+" (lower left, supposedly) to expand the fields and you should see the mail server addresses.

Don't blame me if that's incorrect!   ;)

Thanks - unfortunately I don't have access to the account options.  I sort of was wondering if that's where the info would be.  I suppose IT is trying to tell us not to mess with it!  ::)

I think for most companies and organizations IT has to approve it.  R has his on his iPhone, but his IT guys told them how.  He also has to have a keycode lock on it because of that.

Oh, no.  If it was, I'd have no choice but to be able to access my work email!

I just access it through the website. I don't want to HAVE to access my work e-mail, but I don't mind being able to access it if I choose.  ;)
