question on online visa application re: a previous passport number N/A?

hello!
i have begun doing my online application for my spousal visa and have hit a bump just a few questions in:
when asked about a previous passport, my answer is that yes and it was stolen.
then it asks me what that previous passport number is and where it was issued.

i am unable to locate that number because it was from 1995 and the passport office says they can't locate info that far back and to get my info to write a letter to blah blah blah and pay $60 to expect a reply in like 6 weeks! then the guy on the phone at the passport office said to try putting N/A in the blanks so i did and it let me proceed to the next page!

my question is, MUST i find my old passport number or can i put N/A?
or should i put something else?

please advise!

Your answer is fine. Really you're overthinking and trying to make this more complex than it actually is.

ok thanks! i've been screwed previously for checking a box incorrectly, so i just wanted to make sure. so i'm of course paranoid i'll do something wrong.

Some of the questions (such as yours) are actually answered on the online application.  If you click on the "?", additional will populate on the left hand side of the screen.  There are instructions listed there that say if you don't have the previous passport number, issuing authority, location, etc. to just put "N/A" or "none"...it also asks you later on where your passport is...so if you put "stolen/lost" then it would be obvious why you don't have the information.
