Anyone rehome their pets?
« on: September 14, 2009, 12:53:50 AM »
I just got my first quote back from a pet moving service and it was high enough that I actually got the hiccups after seeing it.  It's looking like we'll be moving about 3 months before the cats are ready to go.  Airfare, combined with quarantine fees is starting to make it look not possible to take them.  Has anyone had any success with rehoming pets?  What steps did you take?  We've exhausted our family and friends options and are now looking at strangers :/.

My cat is a former feral and couldn't possibly be rehomed. She hates everybody in the world except me, and she's not always sure about me.

Good luck. That's got to be a hard thing to contemplate.

So you can't do the PETS scheme because they won't be ready to move when you are? You can't find anyone to temporarily keep them and send them on in 3 months?

If not, and you can't do the quarantine, then re-homing is obviously the only option. I'd start with your local vets, pet sitters, pet supply shops, etc.

Good luck, it's not an easy situation to be in.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I will be re-homing one of my cats as she's an anxious sort, and I think the transatlantic move would cause semi-permanent mental damage. I think a family member will take her, but if not, I'll have to go the stranger route. It's a very tough thing to do, though, and I wish I didn't have to. (Luckily, my other cat and my dog are incredibly adaptable.)

I'm just curious - Have you ever moved her before? Animals are far more resilient than people realize sometimes, I'm just wondering what makes you think your one cat out of your other pets won't make the transition? What would make rehoming to a strange place with people your cat doesn't know less traumatic than a flight and a new house with you and your other pets?

We've moved a couple of times, and each time it's taken her several weeks to get her bearings. (This has run the gamut from moving across town to another state.)

The cost is also a factor, plus now my dog and cat are halfway through the PETS scheme.

It's not an easy thing to do, certainly. :( My family member lives in NM, though, and I think the climate there will be to my kitty's benefit, as she tends to be a bit snuffly throughout the winters here on the east coast.

Sorry to hear that :-( I'm glad you have found her a good place though!

You might want to check out a website called http://www.PetFinder.com.  It lets you post an adoption profile for your pet.  People looking to adopt can search by region, breed, etc. to find available pets.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.  I'm sure it's not an easy choice.

What about a foster home? There are people who foster animals like foster children.  My cousin did this until she recieved letters from some city office that she had reached the maximum number of pets allowed.  I don't know exactly through what agency/charity she may have done this.

Also, have you checked with your vet's office or Petsmart/Petco?  There are always adoptions outside those stores and perhaps they would know how to go about ensuring that the animal gets a suitable home.

There is always a loving soul that will take animals in. I know how important it is for you to make sure the animal is cared and loved as I am dreading making the decision who will take my dogs.  :\\\'(

Our local Freecycle has started a separate web site for animal/pet stuff. You might check into that as well.

Yes, I am one of those people who has fostered pets.  I've done it via a shelter and a rabbit rescue.  There are places that will sometimes help with a short-term foster.  Good luck to you.

Thanks :).  I just finished reading a response to a post on a rehoming site telling me not to give the cats away for free lest they end up in the hands of dogfighters looking for bait.  Oh. My. God.  Like I didn't have enough to give me a panic attack over.

Oh no!!!!  :o That's so awful... I will never understand how people could be so cruel.  :\\\'(

Someone once left a kitten on my doorstep and I already had two cats who didn't get along with each other, so I didn't want to add a third one to the mix. I took him to PetSmart and they found a home for him within a week. (I called to check on how he was doing.) I only had to give $30 and a few tins of Pet Milk when I dropped him off. I know he was a kitten, so I don't know about full-grown cats, but my friend has adopted two dogs and a ferret from www.petfinder.com before, so there is a chance that posting there might bring some success.
I was lucky that my grandmother wanted to take in my two cats when I moved. I couldn't have afforded to bring them over, and since I had lived at my grandmother's with my cats in the past, they were already used to her and her house. I'm not sure what I would've done otherwise. Good luck!

What a shame you have to rehome them. I got one of my dogs from a website 3 years ago because his owner was moving back to Minnesota.  He was only 5 months http://www.dogpages.org.uk/ It's a really great site if you ignore the self righteous twits who may attack you for wanting to rehome your pets.

I have a hard time visiting the site because I can't bear seeing all the homeless pets on it.  Until my little team of dogs grew I fostered for a shelter.

Please try the site above.  There is also cat's trust and other organizations, but they are so overwhelmed with people giving up their pets and strays.

Good luck.

I was lucky enough to be able to leave my dog with my step-dad (my mom died soon after I got married :\\\'(). My dog, Simon, loves him to death, but it was still a very difficult decision. Simon doesn't take change very well, and being 9 years old, I just didn't think he could make the journey from the West Coast to England.

If I couldn't leave him with my step-dad, I don't know what I would've done.
