Preparing for Thanksgiving before I come over
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:47:32 AM »
Hi all...
Just to be extra sure I will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving properly, I would like to know what products, if anything, from the US I should consider bringing over with me. I am going to bring a can of pumpkin to make pumpkin pie and some bisquick mix for biscuits. Anything else you suggest or can you pretty much find alternatives of most other items?
On a side note, so far, food wise, I'm stocking up on ranch dressing, taco seasoning, chili seasoning, and velveeta shells and cheese! Any other suggestions?
Follow your bliss.

Our Tesco stocks Bisquick. I think it's widely available (in London at least). That sounds like a full list for Thanksgiving though! If you use Poultry Seasoning (I use it in my stuffing and gravy) bring that over. I can't find a good equivalent to what I used at home.

I suggest A1 sauce if you like it! And if you are a peanut butter snob like me, bring over what you like. (Except Skippy, they sell that here. Most peanut butter here has the consistency of toothpaste. blech.) Oh, and if you're a Hersheys fan, bring some bars too!
Finally living with my Husband in London after 6 1/2 years together but apart... and loving my life!

It really depends on what you make for Thanksgiving. I'm from Texas, so my list would be different. I'm a huge fan of green bean casserole, and even though you can find some ingredients here, it doesn't come out the same as it does with the Campbell's soup and French's onions. So I would bring those. Also, I love cornbread stuffing, so I would bring some packages of cornbread mix to make the stuffing. The canned pumpkin is a good idea if you must have pumpkin pie. I would bring a pie tin with you from the states, as I had a really tough time finding a deep dish sort of pie tin like you would use in America. In fact, I only found tart pans at most places. That probably varies according to the area you are in, but it can save you the last minute hassle of trying to find one. Also, I would bring measuring cups and spoons for your American recipes. I make my own taco and chili seasoning, which is so easy to do, so I wouldn't bother bringing that, if it were me. Bisquick is available here. In fact, it might even work better to get the kind sold here, I'm not sure, because the flour is different here. I tried making biscuits with Bisquick I brought from the states and they didn't rise - they were small and hard.  :( I haven't tried it with the Bisquick available here, though.
Anyway, if you tell us what your Thanksgiving spread usually entails, then we can have a better idea of what you might be missing.  :)

I'm not sure where you're moving to but I distinctly remember seeing plenty of ranch dressing and velveeta shells n cheese at Asda.  I didn't pay much attention to seasoning mixes because I always make my own.  Just a thought that might save you some hassle of packing and shipping stuff when it is available in the UK.

You can buy pumpkin in a tin here (Libby's brand even!), but second the recommendation of bringing a tin to bake it in.  Finding a deep-dish 9in pie tin has proved exceptionally difficult and would be VERY difficult if you're short on time :).

Buying a tin will save a huge amount of hysterical tears at 6 pm the day before Thanksgiving when you realise that not only will you not be at home, but that you also can't make a pie!   ;)

I finally found one at John Lewis and it is really nice, but I never saw them again.

The ranch dressing widely available here is Paul Newman's or Cardini. Both are very vinegary, though, and not at all like the good creamy stuff in the states. I've never seen anything with Velveeta here, but someone mentioned finding Kraft Mac n Cheese at Asda. Anyway, you can make your own macaroni cheese here and it's so much better when it's homemade.

You can buy pumpkin in a tin here (Libby's brand even)

I've never seen any in my area, so I think this depends on what area of the UK you are moving to. I would suggest bringing some for this year, then at least you won't be running around at the last minute looking for it. You can always keep an eye out for it here and then stock up when you see it.  :)

Agreed on the ranch dressing (it isn't the same) and velveeta (this isn't in the UK).

If the OP will be near London there are plenty of places to get pumpkin.  I can also get Taco and Chili seasoning (El Paso brand) in my Sainsburys.

My experience has been exactly the opposite: I had no trouble finding a proper pie tin at TK Maxx, but I have yet to find Libby's pumpkin. The closest I've seen is pumpkin in glass jars (at exorbitant prices!) at the occasional health-food or gourmet shop.

That said, if you're culinary-minded, fresh pumpkin puree is quite easy to make and nicer than tinned. :)

Fair enough!  I've found it in the same shop (a certain Waitrose) over the past 2 Thanksgivings with no problems, so I guess it really does depend on luck.  Waitrose also sell Chipotle Tabasco, but that's a whole 'another conversation :).

I have serious Waitrose envy. Neither Belfast nor Leeds has one. >:(

I wasn't able to find any canned pumpkin in the Waitrose near me last year and ended up making a sweet potato pie.  If I find some this year I can pick up an extra can and send it to you.

There isn't one near me, either. Apparently there is one in Newcastle somewhere, but I don't go to toon very often.  :(

Thanks for the offer! :-* But I have to confess, I still have a can in the cupboard - I brought a few when I moved over and haven't used it all. I was just commenting that availability varies depending on location. :)

I moved Thanksgiving week last year and was stunned to see a tiny corner in my Waitrose devoted to "American Thanksgiving" with a ton of canned pumpkin.  Also, if in central London, the Whole Foods in Kensington can hook you up with a lot of Thanksgivingy stuff (at a price), as can Panzers/Partridges (again, at a price).

I found jellied Ocean Spray cranberry sauce (I'm not a whole berry girl) on the Ocado site.  It's in a jar and not a can.  I haven't seen it in person at Waitrose, but mine is a smaller one.  I've also seen wild rice on the shelf at Waitrose.
