Somewhere to get married on the Weekend in the US..
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:02:20 PM »
Fiance and I ...are contemplating him flying over on a weekend..and getting married here instead of in the UK...to skip the fiance visa step.

If the Courts are all closed on weekends, where can we get married and obtain a certificate?  He doesnt have vacation time left, so we would need to do it on a weekend.  If we get married in a chapel or something, does he have to be at the court to do paperwork later?  I live in Dallas, TX..so any info on somewhere local would be great.  Vegas isnt an option.  Thanks!

I was planning on getting married in Texas last year, and from my research I'm pretty sure that Texas requires a 3-day waiting period between getting the license and getting married (can be waived by a judge, but usually only done in cases of military deployment and the like).  Trying to do everything on one weekend isn't really an option if you're staying in Texas, I think.

Darn!  It was wishful thinking on my part.  But I figured I would ask.

Here in Pennsylvania there is a 3 day waiting period for your marriage license and you both need to be present to obtain one. You might want to check with one of those little quicky chapels in Vegas...but they might require a marriage license as well...most states have a 3 day waiting period I think

I would suggest Vegas. Look into their license requirements. I'm sure it won't be a problem to get a license there on the weekend   ;)

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

My bad. If that's not an option, I don't think a weekend wedding is possible. There is a reason that people go to Vegas for quick weddings.

There are some counties that do not have the requirement that the other person be present.  Usually they are counties that have prisions in them.  You just need the ID of the other person.  If the OP could fine one near her, she could get the license before he got here and then they could get married over the weekend.  It would take some research, the only ones I know of are in Michigan.

I found some info online about marriage by proxy in Texas.  It looks like you may be able apply for the license without him.

http://marriage.about.com/od/proxymarriages/qt/texasproxy.htm

Research that a little bit more and see if it's legit and something you could manage.  Then you could get married wherever you want to when he gets there.

(Edited to add info found online)

We got married at the county courthouse in San Diego. Made an appointment (you could apply for the license online), walked in, got married, and walked out with marriage certificate. I'm not sure if it would be as easy to do it on a weekend--a lot of the courthouses might be closed (we managed a Wednesday afternoon...), but it was super simple for us.

It looks like we are going to have to do it during the week sometime..as the courts arent open.  I just wasnt sure of how the Justice of the Peace thing worked.  We are both out of vacation time for the year  >:(

Can you take leave without pay for a couple of days? I'd say this is a pretty good reason!  ;D

Erika, call your county clerk of court to find out if you can get the marriage license without your fiance present. I know that here in MI, I can take your fiance's info and get our marriage license. If you can do that, then you can find a minister to marry you on the weekend. We're getting married at a nice bed & breakfast, where we'll also have our reception. The lady who is marrying us is a non-denomination minister & will marry people where ever they want to be married.

If you can get the license during the week without your fiance present, you shouldn't have a problem finding someone who can marry you over the weekend. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. You cold always come up here to MI to get married. hehe

Try here:

Looks like New Orleans might work:

You'd just have to find out if you can do it on the weekend.

If you are both non-residents of FL, you can get your marriage license the same day you go in and apply. You both have to be present but if you went in on Friday morning you could get married on Saturday if you wanted. I got married on the beach in FL and it was spectacular! Hope this helps.
