calendar/diary software?
« on: September 17, 2009, 02:31:15 PM »
I need computer-based diary software. My primary email is Yahoo but I don't like their calendar system. I don't have a mobile/cell phone (yes, really!) but if I can get something that would ultimately be transferable to a cell, that would be a bonus. I don't use Outlook Express at all. I do have a Gmail account which I will be using more. Do they have something?

Given my lack of funds, I'm hoping for some sort of shareware or something web based. I need something where I can have reminders pop up for me as I'm forgetting appointments!

Any thoughts?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I agree.  I think that Google Calendar is probably the best you'll find.  It's very simple to use, and has a few very handy features.  You can set pop-up or e-mail reminders for appointments.  You can also choose to share any or all of your calendar entries, either with the public, or with other individuals who you specify.  You can also share  calendars, which is great if you need to coordinate activities with your family, etc.

Yes, many of my friends use Google Calendar.  The only reason I don't is because I already have calendar software at work.   :P

Another vote for Google calendar! They've come out with a whole bunch of new features recently, too. I like the new "to do" list. AND it even crosses it out on the list for you when you click you've done it!! LOVE that (as a crosser outer!) The color coding you can do for different types of events is also handy. Then it lets you click just to see events in that color (like "Football practice" for ex.) I could go on and on! :D

Google Calendar is great. However, I would also recommend using Mozilla Sunbird or Thunderbird with the Lightning extension. The first is strictly a calendar program and the second is an email program with calendar functionality (like Outlook). Both can access work with multiple calendar formats (Google, Apple, etc). I keep a couple of different calendars through the second option as I like to use a 'regular' program on my computer but still have the ability to access all of my information without my computer (e.g. if traveling). There's also an extension for them that interacts with Remember The Milk for to-do lists as well.
