October Holiday - Berlin, Prague, Avignon or ?
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:41:07 AM »
We never had a holiday this summer because I never got around to getting my UK passport.  Now that I have it, we're trying to decide where to go.  We want somewhere interesting, but not too cold, and possibly more importantly, not too hot.  We're also thinking about traveling by train, so somewhere accessible that way.  If you have any experience of any of these places in the autumn, or any recommendations of other places to consider, I'd love to hear from you.

Prague is wonderful, lots to see and wonderful beer! Could be cold but I went in October and it was nice if you were well wrapped up.

I've only heard good things about Berlin, but I've never been myself. My husband loves Prague and has been a couple of times. If it were me and I couldn't decide, I'd determine which was the cheapest to travel to and pick that one!  ;D That's how we ended up in Amsterdam for a long weekend a couple of years ago!

Berlin is one of my favorite places ever--I'm hoping to go back soon!  I also really enjoyed Prague, as well.  I think Prague is a bit more compact for tourists but there was more to do in Berlin.  Prague felt more 'romantic' and Berlin felt more 'exciting'... I enjoyed walking around Prague more but Berlin by far had better museums and inside sorts of touristy things.   I agree--I'd just pick wherever is cheaper if you're not feeling one over the other.  Enjoy!

Be careful with Prague, it has a reputation for being inexpensive, but it is so not.  Especially in the tourist areas, prices are very high indeed.

Thanks for the replies.  I've been checking out train fares, and it turns out it's insanely expensive to travel to Berlin or Prague on the train.  But it's pretty reasonable to go to the south of France, even first class, so it looks like we'll be heading there.  We have been to northern Germany before, but never to the Mediterranean coast, so I think it should be interesting.  My main worry is that it may be too hot, since I tend to wilt in the heat, but hopefully it will be ok in mid-October.

It will still be warm, but it shouldn't be too hot by mid-October. You never know these days though! I thought we were never going to get any sunshine here in the Lake District this summer but we just had two weeks of good weather!

DH and I would love to sneak away for a long weekend in Oct/Nov since we haven't really had a holiday either and we've got our eye on Switzerland or Italy (Rome since we've just watched Angels and Demons again haha) but if we do end up going away I think, like everyone else, we'll just pick wherever is cheapest at the time.
