1) This time last year, I was...

Learning how to live on very little sleep and learning how to be a mom for the first time with a 4 month old and celebrating my first year of living in the UK and being a newlywed celebrating 6 months of being married.

2) This time 5 years ago, I was...

2004 I was entering my 3rd year working in Social Services and just got onto the hiring list for my dream job! Unfortunately, my home life was going to pot and I was supporting my loser ex-boyfriend who just slept all day and sat in front of the computer all night long binge drinking and eating me out of house & home.

3) This time 10 years ago, I was

24 years old and just returned back to the US after spending a summer in Ukraine living & working in an State run Children's Home (Orphanage) and starting my 2nd year of University in California and working full time graveyard shift at a local gas station. This was before I met the loser ex-boyfriend.

Oh this is fun!

1. This time last year I was...
Just starting my first visit to Scotland to see my BF.  I hadn't seen him since I had met him 2 months prior in Berlin, so I was nervous and excited.  Fortunately the German beer hadn't forsaken me and he was still as swoon-worthy and as kind as I had remembered!

2. This time 5 years ago...
I was starting my second year of college at a new school with a new major.  I was with my first boyfriend and still completely oblivious to how much of a dirtbag he was.

3. This time 10 years ago...
I was a scrawny, scrappy 14-year-old who looked 11 or 12 starting high school with new braces and new clothes that didn't fit because I was so scrawny.  I'd spend the next 4 years being a late bloomer and having crushes on boys I'd never met or have courage to talk to, just because they had weird haircuts and liked rock music.  8)
"It is really a matter of ending this silence and solitude, of breathing and stretching one's arms again."

1. This time last year I was...

getting knocked up. We conceived our daughter around this time last year.  ;D

2. This time 5 years ago...
I was still living the high life in Austin and had not met my DH yet in Dallas. I had more toys than most boys and was a road warrior, traveling domestically for work as a software consultant.

3. This time 10 years ago...

I was planning my trip to Walt Disney World with a friend and my eventual move to Austin from Chicago. Working in the software biz for a global company dreaming of bigger and better in Austin.
I made it!!

1. This time last year... I was counting down the days to the wedding and wrapping up my life in San Diego. I was also busy shoving every riding lesson I could into the days I had left with my awesome trainer.
2.  This time five years ago... I was living in the Bay Area and contemplating moving back to San Diego to be near my parents. Good thing too, I think it helped with the cross-the-Atlantic move later!
3. This time ten years ago... I was in my junior year at university, at Carleton College, and loving it, Minnesota, and life.

1) This time last year, I was...

Working for Boots again, living with my parents again and starting to look for graduate jobs after moving back to the UK from New Mexico.... 11 months later I finally secured one (but I don't start working there until 2010)!

2) This time 5 years ago, I was...

About to start the final year of my undergraduate physics degree, having just spent a year studying abroad in the US. I was just getting over the elation of being back home and eating all my favourite foods again, but starting to feel a little bit homesick for my time in the US.

3) This time 10 years ago, I was...

16 years old, just starting my A-level subjects at school (Physics, Maths, Geography) and rapidly discovering that I wasn't sharing any classes or free periods with any of my close friends... as a result I was about to start on a 2-year downward spiral of losing all of said friends (except one), becoming depressed about losing those friends and hiding away at home/at my dance classes because they were being really bitchy and leaving me out of all social events... so that I ended up with no life at all (except for my studies and my dancing) :(. Not a good time in my life unfortunately (which is sad because 1999 started off as such a great year for me and ended at a real low point).

What a cool thread, Mrs.R!

This time last year, I was:
...just about settling in with a new, nicer manager and working only a short walk away from home rather than an unreliable bus ride away.

This time 5 years ago, I was:
...consumed with grief and stress as my ex and I started going through the divorce process.  What a horrible hearbreaking time--I actually almost blocked it all out.

This time 10 years ago, I was:
...just moving into a beautiful Victorian house in the suburbs with my now ex and about to get married.  It was a stressful time, but I thought I was happy.  I'm much happier now.

This time (Exact day actually) last year, I was...

In NY, visiting my family.  Rich and I had spent the night before in NYC and we were meeting my mom, sister and Josh for lunch at my sister's school.  Oh and I remember going to Grand Central and having the most amazing Carrot Cake muffin for breakfast, and R had a mini apple pie!

This time 5 years ago, I was...

Working at the local Uni.  I'd gotten married (legally) the previous January and had a big wedding in May in NY.  I was only meeting Mindy for coffee once a month or so ;) and going out with my work friends and other friends a lot.

This time 10 years ago, I was...

Living in Somerville, MA with a boyfriend.  Working as a Fundraiser at a Uni in Cambridge.  Starting to yearn for a move back to NYC.  Oh and had just returned from my second trip to London.  I loved it and wanted to go back again soon. (I didn't go again till right after I met R in 2002)

1) This time last year, I was...

Doing the exact same thing I am doing now, which is at my desk working at the same place.  And that's down to the very minute of this time last year.

2) This time 5 years ago, I was...

Living in Louisiana in a bad relationship, going to university for psychology.  I worked at a grocery store called Albertsons and played Magic the Gathering competitively on Friday evenings such as these....

3) This time 10 years ago, I was...

14 years old and had just started my freshman year of highschool, meaning I had just finished spending the whole month in band camp (colorguard) and was performing at friday night football games.

Yes, very fun thread!

This time last year, I was:

doing pretty much the same thing I'm doing now! That is to say, I was working like mad and trying to decide if we should move to England or not.  ;D

This time 5 years ago, I was:

newly back in the US, and had just started freelancing full-time. We just bought our first house, and I spent most days chasing a toddler around. I was very sleep-deprived!

This time 10 years ago, I was:

with my DH in the UK, taking a late honeymoon. We spent 4 months walking the South West Coastal Path, Offa's Dyke, and the Ridgeway with a tent on our back. Childless and mortgage-free! *sigh*

This time last year, I was...

...living in Edinburgh and had overslept and missed the train that was to take me to Manchester to meet DH, who had been in the US for a month!  Poor DH...I felt so bad that I had done something so silly, but I was exhausted.  He then met me at the train station in Manchester and we spent a lovely weekend together.

This time five years ago, I was...

...living in India, and we were planning a trip to Dubai for DH to do a trade show there.  It was probably just the end of monsoon season too.

This time ten years ago, I was...

...living in Chicago and my ex-husband and I had probably just bought our condo downton.  It was a great place and we were happily furnishing it with lovely things.

Yay!  Love reading about everyone's progress through the years!  :)  IMO, it really makes you think because for so many of us (including me) one day seems to just blend into the next & you think that not much is going on - but when you look back & see where you were 'back then' - amazing, isn't it?!  :)
Ring the bells that still can ring

It's really amazing.  A great exercise in contemplating where you're at right now.  My memory is crystal clear, from age 2 til now, but my gods, when I was thinking back on the times with my ex, the difficult times, it was really hard to pin it down.  I really do think I blocked a lot of it out.  The good stuff I can remember more easily.

At this exact time on this exact day one year ago I had just dropped off my cats at the BA cargo office in Atlanta and was scrambling to drop off my rental car and get me and my two 70 kilo suitcases to the airport for my 6:15pm flight to the UK!

5 years ago I was enjoying being in my first year of graduate school in Athens GA.  I had my best classes that semester.

10 years ago I was working a dreadfully boring office job and wishing I could be outside in the garden instead.
...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...
