Income & Sponsoring
« on: September 26, 2009, 03:43:28 PM »
My husband and I just started talking about moving to the US but I am worried about the income or savings we are suppose to have. Currently we don't have any savings and by leaving the UK my husband will be leaving his career in hopes to find one in the US. The 3 of us will be moving in with my father and grandmother until we find jobs and a place to live. So when doing the income/savings does it go by how many people live in one house? And if so, for 5 of us, what is the guidelines?

The I-864 poverty guidelines can be found here, (pdf file) but if you are the sponsor then you will need to be able to show you are capable of supporting yourself, your husband and your child, not the entire household.

Thank you for your help. But one more thing. Since I have been living in the UK how will I be able to show I can support the 3 of us if I will have no income right after we move. Should I try to find a job while in the UK and show them the job offer? Or would/could my co-sponsor (my dad) be able to prove that he would be able to support us with his income?

And just to tag onto iluvmybrit's question, can savings of the sponsor & visa applicant be used to meet this requirement?

Have a look at the I-864, (pdf file) and also the I-864A, (pdf file).

The former must be submitted whether or not you meet the income/savings level required. The latter is to be filled out and submitted if a household member will be co-sponsoring.

There are instructions on there which pertain to meeting the levels of income/savings required.

Britishexpats.com, visajourney.com and diveintoamerica.com will likely have more indepth information and experiences which you will probably find more helpful.
