French's Onions
« on: September 30, 2009, 10:06:31 PM »
Are French's French fried onions or another equivalent available in the UK? I have some recipes that I love that use them. I know that I can get them from one of the outrageously expensive online grocers, but are they available at any of the shops, Costco maybe?

Larger Tescos have crispy fried onions in a tub, usually kept near the salad dressings. I forget the brand name sorry. Also you can buy big bags of crispy fried onions from Indian grocers.

They sold those at Sainsbury's too. I think they were in the soup section or maybe near the croutons.

I have often used the crispy salad onions available here, but I have to say they really aren't AS good as French's. They are not as light, and they are less salty (which I guess may be a good thing), so you may have add a bit more salt than you normally would. They can be easy or hard to find, but our local Morrison's carries them. I might bring some, if you really love them, just until you get settled and can look for the ones here and see what you think. I made a green bean casserole with the onions and mushroom soup available here and there was a DEFINITE difference between the taste of that and the one you would make in America. Even my husband thought the one with American ingredients was much tastier.

I make mine with the UK onions and I don't think it tastes much different. I think the French's one are a little wider and flatter, if that makes sense. That's the only recipe I use fried onions in, so for me, they're a fine substitute.

I think mostly it's the Baxter's cream of mushroom soup (it really does taste different from Campbell's). The casserole does turn out just fine with the onions here, but I am a green bean casserole expert, so I can totally taste the difference.  :P

I was actually going to suggest that it might be the soup that's causing the different taste, rather than the onions. I just love GBC so much that I'm excited to eat it, even if it does taste slightly different!

I must admit, it is great to know you can make it at home, so I definitely take what I can get! But last year for Thanksgiving my mom sent me some onions and Campbell's soup to make it, so when I made it with the UK stuff, since it hadn't been long enough since we had it last time, I could totally tell it wasn't as good as the one made with the American stuff. Even my DH was disappointed and moaning about how the American one tasted better (and he thinks everything British is superior to American... lol). Still, beggars can't be choosers.  :P

You can also find those crispy onions in the food shop at Ikea. They are better than the ones from Tesco/Sainsburys - but not the same as French's.
